Kindle app for PC announced

So I tried it this evening. What springs out immediately to the user is that if there is color in the book, it shows up on the screen of your PC. Reading off the monitor is easy and for some types of books, this is an improvement over the Kindle device itself. Reference works or challenging texts that I have trouble in trying to read on that small screen are easily legible on my 12" laptop monitor. Yet the PC application still offers the font flexibility so even late at night I might be able to read from my laptop. Navigation is pretty basic, but I still like this as an option.

I gave it a try and didn't really care for it. I'm just so used to my K1 and my K2 that I don't at all care for reading from a back-lit computer screen, or from a netbook or laptop that's nowhere as easy to hold as my Kindle. Plus, using it on my netbook, I don't think I'm going to get very good battery life, compared with my Kindle.

I uninstalled it from my netbook and deregistered my netbook. I figure, having the thing installed on my netbook is just one more security concern I have worry about, if my netbook should be stolen. (I take MUCH better care of K1 and K2 than I do the netbook anyway.)

Oh, it's a nice option to have, no question about that, and I've still got the executable so I can easily reinstall the thing if I ever want it, but for now, I'll just stick to my good ole K1 and K2. They're my sweeties!

I started to download it and then thought, why am I doing this? It's nice to know that if something happens to my Kindle or I leave it somewhere I can continue reading, but otherwise it won't help me. But I can see where someone who travels with a laptop would find it helpful not to have to carry two devices, and the biggest advantage for me, personally, is that I can now share my collection with a few others. I already have my niece's Kindle on my account, and I've offered to do this for my sister, who doesn't have a Kindle. Keep a slot for myself for future use, and that still leaves 2 others I could offer to friends or family if I feel like it. Of course, I'd have to make sure they paid me for what they bought!
