Hello. I'm watching a fabulous TV series that takes place in 16th century Korea (Dae Jang-geum http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0409546/) and I was wondering whether anyone could recommend me a good history book dealing with Joseon dynasty Korea?

Ooh! I love Daejanggeum too. (When you're finished, you might want to try a drama called Yi San, which is equally as good with a lot of the same cast and crew.)

While they aren't history texts on the Joseon dynasty per se, I'd recommend JaHyun Kim Haboush's The Memoirs of Lady Hyegyong and A Heritage of Kings. Although both deal specifically with persons and events about two centuries after Daejanggeum's time period, Haboush does a very good job of clearly explaining elements of Joseon society (social mores, political thought, historical developments) that might be puzzling or opaque to non-academicians.

Thank you very much for the recommendations. I'll give both the movie and the books a try. But there must also be some history books dealing with this period, at least meagerly.

Rider: I haven't read any of these, I just found them in a consortium of library catalogues.

Social history of the early Choson dynasty : the functional aspects of governmental structure, 1392-1592 / Sohn Pokee (Pow-key)

Perhaps a bit earlier than you wanted : King Sejong the Great : the light of fifteenth century Korea / edited by Young-Key Kim-Renaud.

If you like military history : Between dreams and reality : the military examination in late Choson Korea, 1600-1894 / Eugene Y. Park. Military examination in late Choson Korea, 1600-1894

This might be a bit too specialized for your interests : Interior space and furniture of Joseon upper-class houses written and edited by Choi Sang-Hun ; translated by Cho Yoon-jung, Min Eun-young.
