Vintage children's and young adult books Message Board

Oooh, The Circus Is Coming doesn't get over-ridden by Circus Shoes - seeing it in the commonly shared books list is a nice way of finding that out!

What are your favorite vintage juvenile books? This last year I've been really enjoying Ransome's "Swallows and Amazonz" series of books. I've also enjoyed a few books by Elizabeth Kyle, "Lost Karin" and "Holly Hotel"

I've been casting about for different copies of "Fables of Fontaine" - there is great art and enormous variation in presentation and translation; also, I've got an old copy of The Secret River that has become a pretty special book around our place.

How nice to see The Five Little Peppers show up - now I feel at home. That's an all-time favorite, most-beloved book of my childhood.

Our Five Little Peppers books have made it through three generations of children in my wife's family - and have been thoroughly enjoyed by each one.

Bizarrely, I don't know if I've ever read The Five Little Peppers, although it seems as though I must have.

Some of my favorite vintage books have been All-of-a-kind Family, pretty much anything Noel Streatfeild or Jean Estoril (aka Mabel Esther Allan), and the Cherry Ames books. Oh, and then there is On Your Toes, Susie, and Patricia's Secret, two of my only vintage paperbacks that are still in readable shape. :)

I would strongly tout Hobberdy Dick by Katharine Mary Briggs and The Land of Green Ginger by Noel Langley. I have had to renew my childhood copies, although I still have the originals, but they are in many many pieces. Someone once let me read aloud from their copy of Land of Green Ginger, which was a period colour illustrated hardback with a texture cover. It was wonderful.

miki, Cherry Ames and On Your Toes, Susie are two of my own favorites! My original copy of Susie is held together with strapping tape.

Also loved Mystery of the Haunted Pool and Follow My Leader as a child. Blue Treasure: the Mystery of Tamarind Court is a real oldie but goodie; looks like I'm the only one that has that one cataloged, Touchstones doesn't even recognize it :(.

wow quartzite, I've never met anyone else who knew of that book. Only 13 are cataloged in LT, although I guess many more like yourself read it but don't still have it.

It is still a dream of mine to tour the Hudson River Valley someday -- when I actually work at a job that provides paid vacation :)! And all because of that book.

Phyllis A. Whitney used to be a real favorite of mine as a teen. Didn't her books get serialized alot in Good Housekeeping magazine?...
