Please can you recommend an intro that puts her in context and is also a nice intro to Existentialism.

Existentialism is one of the subjects in the study of philosophy. Simone de Beauvoir, a French writer is best known for her book, "The Second Sex" (the only
English-translated book I know) touched on the subject of feminism, and I think it is a good introduction to Existentialism linked to her writings. To know more about this author and her works, you can checked with on (Simone De Beauvoir).

About her and the movement - given that outsiders tend to be objective, relatively speaking. And gentle on the reader?!

The Late Robert G. Solomon's Existentialism covers just about all the prominent existentialists; his parsing of Ethics of Ambiguity does a great job of explaining her connections with this field.
