My husband and I are leaving for Scotland on Friday and my Parents are watching Pepper while we're away. We dropped her off at their house this past weekend and are now home without her. There are things that I didn't realize until she was gone that I've just come to expect of her and I was wondering what do you expect of your dogs.

For instance, when I turn off my TV it makes a click sound, and every time that click happens Pepper scrambles to her feet. So now when I turn off the TV I expect to hear her scrambling.

I expect Scottie to appear whenever I pick up my keys. She has hopes of going for a walk.

Where in scotland are you going and for how long?

I've never had a pet sleep with me until I got Finnegan (mid December last year). All of our other dogs have slept in my parents bed. Anywho...when I was away to Washington I didn't sleep very well. About the 3rd night I realized it was because I didn't have a puppy curled up next to me.

We'll be all over. For the first week we'll be in my Mother-in-laws home town near Glasgow, then the second week we're going to Edinburgh, Inverness and Oban.

As soon as I get up, I expect her to run in the living room and get a toy. It's our ritual. I play with her and love on her before getting ready for work. Are most of the members on this group from the UK? I'm in the USA and live in Indiana.

Hi and welcome Beecharmer. I think we're a pretty mixed group really - there are plenty of British, Americans, Aussies (like me!) etc.

>2 QueenOfDenmark: Jody - I know what you mean about the keys - Bonnie was exactly the same. I lived and worked interstate for a while and Bonnie stayed with my parents, but even months after I moved away I would still pick my keys up as quietly as possible out of habit (so as not to draw her attention).

Beecharmer, I'm in Indiana too!

Next week Miles is going on an overnight trip to the vet to be neutered. I'm already sad thinking of not seeing and hearing him walking next to me wherever I go around the house.

Hey Lefty,

Our vet let me bring Ben home from being neutered after he woke up and was checked out. I had to assure him there would be no activity at all and easy on the food. I just couldn't handle him being up there at night. Kirby & Finn gave me the thought to get him a blankie...this pic is when he got home..he could not hold the blankie & toy at the same time since he was a little drugged still..he still loves his blankie.

Ben's blankie has 2 doggies on it and says "Daddy's Little Champ"...funny it came from the infants section at Wal-Mart.
I expected him to be a handful in keeping him from being rowdy ...but he so needed to sleep. that suregery was 2 weeks ago.

Poor Ben! You can tell from his face that he was still a little out of it.

I seem to think that we got to bring Sophie home the same day as her spaying surgery. The vet told us to keep the activity minimal for a week, and not to feed her for 24 hours. After the first two days, keeping her from being too active was really tricky!

We weren't allowed to have Pepper until after she was recovered from her surgery. So we paid for her and had all the adoption papers filled out and such but we have to wait 2 weeks to get her.

All of Finn's blankies are baby blankets!

Mandy, how did you make it 2 weeks without your baby while you in Scotland? Was Pepper beside her self a tad?

The 2 weeks in Scotland went ok without my baby. When she saw us she was crazy, running in circles doing her cry/bark and for 2 days anytime we went near a door she would run after us. It was a little heart breaking, but once my parents left and she realized she was staying with us, she calmed down and feel right asleep, twitching and barking in a deep deep sleep. It was really cute.

Something I didn't expect:
We've had Finnegan for almost 9 months. Last night he discovered the little half ball on the wall (the door stopper). He was trying to get it off the wall, when I noticed and told him to stop. It took him 9 months to notice it.
He's a mess.

Something I expect:
I set the alarm for 8 on a week-end, 6:30 or 7 ish Ben will get at the foot of the bed then start his "slow creep" inching up the bed. He lays down beside me and sighs, then rolls like he can't get comfortable and sighs he does this until I giggle then he is oh so happy and he goes & gets the Goldens and announces it's time to go out.

During the work week, I set the alarm earlier....it matters not....He will beat the clock regardless of when it is set. I just expect it!

#17 -- Sophie does something similar. She sleeps on my bed, and usually about half an hour before the alarm goes off she starts moving around. When she sees that I am starting to wake up, she will stand up and try to lick my face, so I've gotten in the habit of covering my head with a blanket as soon as I start to wake up, and not come out until I am ready to wake up. She gets really excited when the alarm goes off because she knows that I will be getting up.

17: Pepper will just start staring at me with a little whine or a gentle pawing until she sees my eyes open then jumps up on me and shoves her nose under my hands until I get up, then she likes to lie down where I just got up and falls back asleep.

#17: Finn does something similar. Lately I've been going to bed later and he's sleeping past the alarm clock. I understand because I want to sleep later too.
He'll whine until I get up (like Pepper!)

Of my three only Greta Garbo sleeps in the bed with me, under the covers, except for her nose. Nicky and Buckwheat are on the floor in dog beds. Just before the alarm time (5 am!!!!) weekdays and weekends Nicky comes from his bed to the side of the bed and begins to quietly make little grunts and groans. If it does not wake me, it will wake Greta Garbo. Between the two of them I usually must get up and begin the ritual of opening the door and fixing the breakfasts. Frequently, Buckwheat sleeps through the whole deal. I wish I could be him on Saturdays and Sundays and he could get up and open the door and fix the food.

Kirby never stays in my room, unless he's trying to steal something. Mom got an oxygen machine that she has to use at night (had it for less than a week), so none of the dogs can be in there with her. Now Kirby and Finnegan both sleep with me. I am so glad I have a queen sized bed. There's barely enough room for me on there.

#8= Outlaw had to wear a huge cone on his head after he was neutered for an entire week! He looked so pathetic and we had to help him up the stairs and in to his crate. Plus, he couldn't properly exercise(run, play, etc.) for that week. That was hard!

Brontë's best friend from the local park - Leo - has just been neutered and is having to wear a cone. His "Mum" brought him to the park last night (the first time for nearly a week), but he wasn't allowed to run around and play like normal, although both he and Brontë desperately wanted to! In the end they both lay down and Brontë stuck her head and shoulders in the cone with Leo, and they just lay there nuzzling and smooching each other - it was so cute!

Valerie, you've reminded me of another Leo and his response to castration. Leo was a dog with a mind of his own who liked to take himself off to check over the neighbourhood regularly. the castration was an attempt to check his escapes to romance every bitch in the village. On returning home with him from the vet hospital he was allowed the freedom of the back garden. Imagine my horror when looking out to check on him and seeing him on top of a 6ft+ hedge and about to descend the other side. My first thought was for his stitches and the trouble (& cost) of having them redone. The following picture was taken after he allowed me to catch up to him about 40 minutes later.

I think he was making a comment!

This was DEFINITELY not expected, but I didn't want to start a new thread Sooooo latest Pepper weirdness. I'm in my kitchen getting myself some yogurt so of course Pepper heard me opening the container and came running down the stairs (they are right off my kitchen) in hopes that I would give her some yogurt, I turn around to greet her and there she is...wearing a pair of my underwear, and I mean that she somehow got her head and her front right leg through one leg hole and was wearing them sash style. I have no clue how she pulled this off. I have a picture but you'll have to forgive me for not wanting to post my underwear on the internet...but it was HYSTERICAL and I just had to share.

BAHAHAHA!!!! That is sooo hysterical! Our furbabies are so goofy! Pepper had to have cracked you up immediately with that one. Please tell me your hubby was there to witness a good laugh as well!

OH yes, as soon as I realized what she had done I just ran for my camera and couldn't stop laughing. Unfortunately, I was all alone, Hubby is gone for 6 weeks, but he enjoyed the photo.

Good one Pepper, but I hope you don't behave like Leo who on two occasions returned from his escapades with items which I presume belonged to one of my young female neighbours. He didn't leave them in a fit state to be returned so they were discretely disposed of. It gave my household some amusement though.
But on a similar note, my youngest sister once had a greyhound bitch and to protect her carpets she dressed it in her own underwear when it was in season; with a hole cut out for it's tail. I always found it a hilarious sight.

Pepper, that is to funny! I almost fell out of the chair laughing.
Thanks for the chuckle.
