Overall, I really enjoyed the book especially the magical, surrealist scenes. I don't feel however that I understood the final message (I think that I would have ended up in the mental hospital too). Obviously Ivan Nikolayevitch attains a new level of consciousness which the others haven't - but what? The realization of peace after death? The necessity of evil for good to exist? The revival of faith in a Communist state? I think I need to read a commentary now!...

Cecilturtle I don't feel however that I understood the final message: you and me both! Things became a bit clearer after reading some of the commentaries on Bulgakov.

My favourite part of the book is when Margarita becomes involved with Satan, becomes a witch, hosts a party for the underworld and gets her lover back.
