"A Discworld tale, Going Postal features a British cast that includes Richard Coyle (Coupling) as Moist Von Lipwig, David Suchet (Agatha Christie's Poirot) as Reacher Gilt, Charles Dance (Gosford Park, Bleak House) as Lord Vetinari, and Claire Foy (Little Dorrit) as Adora Belle Dearheart. Also in the film are Steve Pemberton (The League of Gentlemen, Psychoville) as Drumknott, Andrew Sachs (Fawlty Towers) as Groat and Tamsin Greig (Green Wing, Black Books) as Miss Cripslock. ..."

Sigh. I still want David Tennant to play Moist, but this looks like a pretty good cast.

oh goody. Charles Dance as Vetinari. he made a very fine Tulkinghorn in bleak house and there are similarities.

i wonder how long it will take for this to get to the endlessly benighted US. *sigh*

I'm not so sure about David Suchet as Reacher Gilt though … I always think of Gilt as a slightly more swashbuckling version of Vetinari.

@ 4

We're not due to get it until Easter 2010 here in the UK which I believe is early April. They showed "The Colour of Magic" over Easter 2008 here, middle to late March. I don't know when TCOM was shown over there but would guess that a similar timeframe would apply to "Going Postal".

Oh pooh, I've just received my copy of Sky Magazine for April and there is no mention of Going Postal in it, plenty of other Easter events such as The Pacific on Sky Movies. The Sky1 website only has a placeholder http://sky1.sky.com/going-postal with no other data although there are some sneak preview pictures from the beginning of the year http://sky1.sky.com/coming-to-sky1-hd-in-2010-sneak-peek-pictures

Maybe we aren't getting it this Easter.

Thanks Peta31.

hmmmm if it's the end of May I would probably guess that would be Sunday the 30th and Monday the 31st, the Late Spring Bank Holiday weekend.

David Tennant as Moist ? Sounds a really good idea. I think David Suchet was Reacher Gilt might be OK, he was stunning in "The Way We Live Now" - expert at real menace behind a smile. Looking forward to it - who do I know who's got sky1?

21> David Tennant as Moist was a great idea, but sadly not to happen. However, I've watched the trailer and Richard Coyle seems like he'll be really good, so that's ok.

Much as I love David Tennant, I think he would stand out more than Moist would ever want to. David doesn't exactly blend in. :)

Just had a look around and the placeholder I mentioned above, http://sky1.sky.com/going-postal , now has the trailer and some other features. Clicking on the trailer link takes you to some further text which states May for the showing. Still no actual date though.

Woo Hoo, Sky Mag for May now arrived and Sunday May the 30th is the date they have listed for Going Postal. Presuming that it's in the same format as the earlier Sky Discworld films then I guess that this will be part 1 and part 2 will be shown on Monday the 31st, which is a Bank Holiday here in the UK.

Lots of wonderful stuff now at http://www.sky.com/goingpostal and I can confirm that this will be shown over 2 evenings here. Part 1 will be on Sunday 30th May at 18:00 and part 2 on Monday 31st May also at 18:00. Both episodes last for 2 hours. I've no idea about when it will reach other shores though.

So, did anyone watch it? I just finished the second part and really liked it.

The fact that they didn't need as many special effects as in Hogfather or Colour of Magic probably did the movie a lot of good, since those first two movies seemed a bit cheaply made at times. I still think the golems and especially the banshee were a bit rubbish, but overall the costume and set designers did a great job (There are a lot of little details, that only someone who has read the books would spot).

Richard Coyle was very good as Moist and Claire Foy was absolutely brilliant as Adora Dearheart. Charles Dance did a solid job as Vetinari, but I'd still favor some other actors in the role (Alan Rickman for example would be great). Reacher Gilt probably deviated most from his description in the book, or perhaps I just always imagined him as a bit more colourful character. He was a bit too stereotype villain, dressed all in black and his parrot was missing. Miss Cripslock (Tamsin Greig), Groat (Andrew Sachs) and Stanley were pretty much spot on. And of course, Sir Terry himself has a cameo appearance.

Overall, this is my favorite Discworld adaptation so far. Hogfather was good, but it could have done with a bigger budget, and Colour of Magic/The Light Fantastic have their weaknesses in book form and the movie didn't really make up for that (and I didn't agree with some of the casting choices). Going Postal does a lot of stuff right (good script, great cast...) and didn't have any major faults.

I'm going to have to see if I can find it on YouTube - I doubt it will be shown locally for some time.

Watched all the promos and stuff on the web and looks great.

msg 29 - So, did anyone watch it? I just finished the second part and really liked it.

I've got both parts on my Sky+ and was hoping to watch them this afternoon but didn't find time. Have to try again tomorrow. I have to watch them soon as I have a new Sky+ box to install and need to watch everything before I install it.

Glad it sounds good though.

Watched this today and enjoyed it a lot. A nice way to spend 4 hours. Everyone seemed to fit their roles so far as I could recall from the book. It was nice that there was no Sir David Jason in a leading role. A couple of odd points to me were:-
1) the Thud board , I thought it was supposed to be octagonal not square
2) in the Golem Trust offices the whereabouts board had a lot of assignments to MVL, assuming that MVL meant Moist von Lipwig, even before he had hired additional Golems

But as I said above enjoyable.

Apparently the DVD, 2-Disc Special Edition DVD and Blu-ray are due out 23rd August 2010 here in the UK.

Dave

ETA: I’ve read rumours that Sourcery will be the next film and then possibly Making Money.

I looked for it, but it seems to only be showing in the UK. Has anyone heard anything about it coming out on DVD? I am reluctant to spend four hours watching it on YouTube.

34justjim
Editado: Jun 2, 2010, 8:50 pm

The playing area of a Thud! board is an irregular octagon.

In the roundworld it is usually manufactured on a square board which folds into quarters to fit in the box.

It is a very popular game amongst wannabe tyrants at DW conventions!

eta I haven't seen the adaptation as yet, these things tend to get delivered to XXXX by Wandering Albatrosses and take quite some time :(

woo hoo my copy of the Blu-ray has just arrived from IndigoStarfish, amazon.co.uk's Jersey operation. For those that are interested in these matters it apparently is region locked to B which I believe is Western Europe, Africa, Australia and New Zealand. I don't know about the DVD but would guess that it will be region 2.

2. News

Good news for US Discworld Fans. Going Postal will finally get released in the US. The provisional release date is 20th September 2011.

The DVD and Blu-ray will be distributed by a company called Acorn.

A quick search of Acornmedia.com finds the following link:

http://acornonline.com/terry-pratchett-going-postal/p/terry-pratchett-going-post...

Which strangely states they are expecting stock in July.

Amazon shows it as available for pre-order with a pub-date of September 20th, as well. I'm hoping the price comes down a bit, as $35.99 a bit pricy. Hopefully it will come down a bit with age!

David Tennant would have been a fantastic Moist, but aside from that, the movie was perfect, particularly Claire Foy as Adora.

Just received it this morning (ordered 4 weeks ago).
Watching it (with pauses) has I type.
More moralistic than I remember the book, but on the whole I do like it. True to the image of Sir PTerrys worlds I got from the books.

I want no demand many more films.
