TechCrunch is currently reviewing Shelfari - I presume it was Michael Arrington (TechCrunch Head Honcho) who posted in my thread on their site about them revisiting LibraryThing (I mentioned this a few weeks ago here) and he advised about the pending Shelfari article.

Well the article is here ( http://www.techcrunch.com/2007/01/18/keep-an-eye-on-shelfari/ ) and the comments aren't falling too favourably on LibraryThing - claiming LibraryThing is messy and Michael himself says Shelfari is better designed.

This is not on - I hope things live up to the claims that 2007 will be a big year for LT, there's a great site here which can blossom so much more.

Well, that's silly. Shelfari is ugly. Seriously, it's just a pile of cover images.

More important, if your library is at all esoteric, it won't find your books and there doesn't appear to be any way to add them manually (you can if you have a different edition of a book the search comes up with, but not if it doesn't come up at all!). And there seems to be no way to edit the book details to add information or correct errors.

I'll stick with LT, thank you!

This may be blasphemy, but I was actually just looking at Shelfari yesterday because there are some aspects of LT that I'm not very happy with (for example, Tim's refusal to add more columns to catalogue view because he considers the aesthetics of the display-editing screen more important than the functionality of the catalogue screen).

Of course, my conclusion was that Shelfari is nowhere near as good as LT. I can't even express how inferior it is. I don't understand why people keep praising its appearance - I'd much rather have useful information than pretty pictures.

Do you have some objection to discussion of this here? What makes you think people aren't "telling them"?

I have no objection to discussing it here.
I note that the comments here are not echoed there.
