I have K1, I don't know how it works on a K2. I simply scroll the silver cursor up to the line with the footnote and click the wheel. A window will pop up asking if you want to look something up etc. At the bottom of that window should be the footnote. Click on that and it will take you to the footnote. To get back where you came from, hit the Back button.
I'm assuming that the footnote feature is properly implemented by the publisher, i.e. they act like a hyperlink on a webpage. If a publisher is lazy and doesn't do that, you're out of luck.

Footnotes hardly ever work right because the publishers don't go to the trouble of creating proper hyperlinks. I've never had the occasion to use footnoted files on K1 for that reason.
Just recently, though, I got Marx's "Kapital" and it's currently on my K2. Believe it or not, the 99-cent MobileReference edition seems to be perfectly formatted for footnoting! All you need to do is click on the footnote in the text and it takes you right there. They don't have any hyperlinking to return you from the footnote to the text, but that doesn't matter because all you have to do is use your back button.
If the publisher hasn't formatted for hyperlinking, though, you're pretty much out of luck. Most likely the footnotes are going to appear as endnotes, so you can always put a bookmark on or near the current footnote page, go to the bookmark, and then page-forward as needed, but make sure you bookmark the spot in your text that you want to go back to. It's really cumbersome, and if I were you I'd download a SAMPLE file first and check it out assuming that the footnotes are really important to you. I made the mistake of buying Antony Beevor's history of the Spanish Civil War for Kindle and it's a mess because the footnotes are really important but aren't properly hyperlinked. Eventually I'll just buy the treeware version.

Thanks CurrerBell. I'm reading Keynes's General Theory of Employment, Interest & Money, so the footnotes are important to me. The first version I downloaded was unreadable, so I read the reviewers in Amazon and one of them recommended The Kindle edition published by Signalman Publishing. He said it was formatted perfectly for the Kindle. It is at least readable, but I can't get to the footnotes; and I can't even use the chapter headings to jump from chapter to chapter. I'll try what you suggest.
