Street food

I got into a discussion with a friend at his Detectives Beyond Borders blog the other day, and it occurred to me that neither Archie nor any of the 'Teers are ever seen grabbing a hot dog from a street vendor. In NYC!

So I started wondering if there were no hot dog carts or pretzel carts in New York at mid-century, and when that changed (if it did; it may be that Archie just preferred diners and pie).

Seems to me that as often as he was out and about tailing people and waiting them out he'd have needed a bite that didn't entail having to go inside a restaurant where he might lose the mark, no?

Hmm, I never thought about that, never having been to NYC. I always like the image of him in the diners. Maybe he never ate while tailing someone, but saved up for Fritz' meals or sandwiches.

when he was on the move, of course he didn't stop to eat but when he was on a tail that involved periods of inactivity, he had milk and bananas quite often.

according to this article, the first hot dogs were sausages sold in new york in 1936 at the polo grounds.

now i ask you, it's one thing to eat bananas with milk on the run but if you had Fritz Brenner making saucisse minuit at least once a month at the old brownstone, would *you* buy a sausage on the street? pfui! ;)

I especially wouldn't after reading Terry Pratchett's books. :) I have a very hard time buying from any food vendor now.

*chuckle* one could hope that NYC's vendors might be a step up from those of ankh-morpork but even so. . .

I always prefer NOT to know what's in my "sausage inna bun"!

#8 naw, that was my bad. i know Aaron Sorkin knew the attribution and so, by inference or extension, did Leo. i just like the way he says it and i was too darn lazy to look up the original source.

i stand corrected on Leo's behalf. Leo knew stuff. me? not so much. :)
