Graveyard Book from Neil Gaiman---best suited for??

Trying to decide if this book is well-suited for third through sixth graders. I've started it, but am not able to find enough time to finish it. I have had fifth and sixth graders asking for it. If anyone has read it, I'd be interested in your perspective.

Definitely suited for 4th, 5th and 6th graders, IMO.

ETA: It is based on Kipling's Mowgli stories in The Jungle Book in tone and structure. If you recall, those started with a violent event as well, but the focus is not on that, but on the aftermath. If you haven't read them--well, the Disney version is NOT where they are at, but they were favorites of mine when I was that age.

I think the dark nature and nuances of the book are too difficult for anyone younger than sixth grade.

I'd' say know the child and for some 4th graders, this is a good choice, but unsuitable for others. I think if they've read Harry Potter, they can handle this. It's about as dark as the later Harry Potter books.

I would give it to fifth and sixth graders, maybe even younger kids, depending on their reading level and maturity level.

If they've read any of the Harry Potter books, I'd say they can handle TGB. Bod's journey isn't radically different from Harry's -- his family is killed by an evil man, who continues to hunt for him, and he is raised in a place where he doesn't belong, until eventually he has to return to "his" people: the living.

I think it is best suited for 5th Grade to 8th Grade. I read this book in 4th and to be truthful I was a bit disturbed.

It's the opening scene that would make me leery of giving this to a 5th grader. That's because (SPOILER for first page or two) the killer has just killed two parents and their daughter, and is now going to hunt down a mere toddler and kill him. God! This is marketed to children!?

Ok but has anyone seen a Disney movie?

My boys listened to this as an audiobook when they were in 3rd and 6th grade (I think, might have been 4th and 7th) and both found it uncomfortably dark, while I enjoyed it. To be fair, though, both of them also thought Coraline was way too creepy, so maybe Gaiman just isn't for them (though we all liked Odd and the Frost Giants.)
