Could I just suggest you have a printed slip to put in the package that says something like:
There is no software or a driver.
Read and print out the barcodes in the manual at http://greyhead.net/files/lt/cuecat_for_lt.pdf and PRACTICE.
Check that you have numlock on.
Check that the cursor is flashing in the right place in the Add book screen.
Finally I should report that it does not work when the book has just an ISBN number and no bar code, so it’s not the best place to test it. I was so excited, I didn’t get my two cups of strong coffee before my brain starts functioning. Just my luck that it was the only book on my desk when the cuecat arrived.

Thank you SO much for your post with the link!!! I thought my CueCat was broken because I couldn't get it to scan the way the scanners work at my library. The tutorial you link to gave me the answers and now it's working and I'm a happy little clam!!
