Titles

Is there anyone besides me who is disappointed over the title change in Jasper Fforde's upcoming Thursday Next book? I found "The War of the Words" to sound so appealing. At least with a title like "First Among Sequels" we can probably count on even more Thursday Next books beyond this 'Next' one.

When I first came across LibraryThing, I guess I got the wrong impression. I had thought people "talked" more often. Oh well :(

Here's an update on the case of the title:

Within the last week, I came across something online concerning Jasper Fforde's next book, containing a direct quote from him. Fforde said while "First Among Sequels" was his original title or title-in-progress, his publishers thought it would confuse readers. For now, they are sticking to the title "First Among Sequels," but the decided title is "The War of the Words."

#2 There's a lot of messages in Talk, its easy to miss new ones that one is interested in.

SO the published title is going to be "war of the words"? do you know if they are keeping it constant between the UK and the USA - they do sometimes change these things.

One problem with war is that there are a lot of Vietnam/WWII books with similar titles - try touchstoning it!

Hmm, I see what you mean. Well, I don't know if they'll have differences between the UK and USA titles. I hope not. As an American, I can say that while I see the reasoning at times, I would not with this. (American children readers of the Harry Potter series may have needed it for the first book.) Anyone who reads Jasper Forde's books should be able go without a 'special' USA created title. Do you know if any of his books had separate titles between the UK and USA?

the UK versions were:

the eyre affair, lost in a good book, well of lost plots, something rotten and the big over easy with fourth bear published in hardback 6 months ago.

I don't believe these were different - although I'm sure the covers were.

This means the titles have been the same so far.

The covers have definately been different. Occasionally, I find a Jasper Fforde book in the UK edition, but only used. (I regularly went to a used book store up until two weeks ago, when it closed. Six weeks to go till they open their store again, and at a new location.) I wonder if LibraryThing will ever develop in the way of letting us display the different covers here. I suppose we may be able to find them somewhere else on the site.

In your catalog you will see a pencil Icon on the right of every entry. This is the edit book information page. Click on this. A lot of the fields are editable so now is a great time to make sure the information is correct and complete! Amazon makes quite a few errors. leading to orphan entries and incorrect shared information.

On the left is "change book cover" click on this and you'll see a list of amazon covers appear, and beneath a list of covers scanned in and uploaded by other users. Select the correct one.

If none are there scan in and upload your own(has worked in the past.

I'm stumped. Today, I looked for "The War of the Words" on LibraryThing because books that haven't been released can still show up. What I found was "First Among Sequels," matching the same author. So as to not lose it, I added it to my library.

I have to say, it doesn't quite look like a real cover. Clearly, it represents a US edition. I don't think it possess the style and font usually given to the UK editions. While the photo rings as possibly true, the title doesn't add up to the normal style or font size. Infact, the title seems fairly small in comparision to his other US editions.

Right now, my thoughts are that the final cover will not look exactly like this, for either the US or UK edition. But the title? What I had found about "The War of the Words" was all over the place. I'm still baffled. I'm going to continue checking book websites (like Barnes & Noble) every so often for a cover appearance.

Barnes & Noble doesn't list it yet.

Borders Books lists the book as "Next Among Sequels," but offers no cover image. The price is $24.95.

Amazon offers the same cover image as LibraryThing offers, and prices it as $17.22.

I'm in the process of looking at the books in my LT library in "covers" mode and changing book covers that aren't the same as mine, either by clicking on already scanned and uploaded ones or taking digital photos and uploading them myself. It's been working fine - a pity it's a big job for me, though, as many of my "coverless" books are obscure mythology reference works that have no cover already scanned, so I have at least several hundred pictures to take!

Just in case we weren't sure Jasper has just updated his website. It look slike it is definetly going to be "First Amoung Sequels" with two different cover designs for the US and the UK.

Nope, but I have now reserved it at my library. Thanks for the heads up. :)

It's not supposed to come out until July 2009. Jasper had a new baby (ok, his wife did), and he needed more time to work on the book. It seems to be a publishing schedule thing as well.
