I look around the web but am having problems identifying good sites that are free for weight loss diets. All the places I find require purchase of a plan.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Been awhile since I checked this group ^_^

I don't know any good weight loss diet sites per say. It would help if I knew more about your current situation?

Assuming you are vegetarian - My caution is to make sure you are not replacing meat with carbs and cheese (a common mistake) which can lead to weight gain and is not a balanced way of eating. Focus on the vegetables with the dairy and bread as the minority.

Assuming you are vegan - Lots of veggies and light meals, make sure you have not gone for processed boca and meat alternatives in every meal as well as frozen ready to eat dishes. Most of these are fairly high calorie with not enough vegetables.
I always remind myself , I can eat as many vegetables and fruits as I want if they are fresh (meaning not canned/frozen/processed) including avocados which are loaded with good fats. The problem comes if I want those vegetables with noodles and lots of sauces.

Drink Water or tea and avoid drinking lots of fruit juice (stick to fresh fruit)

If none of this is the problem and you are exercising maybe try to up raw foods to at least half of your diet?
Make sure you are getting adequate fiber.

I'm not too informed on current diets because I tend to view food and health as changing your eating habits permanently and making lifestyle changes but I've known several people to have great results on the following.
- macrobiotic diets
- vegan diets
- 80% raw diets

Many thanks for your comments.

I do the exercise and watch out for the carbs. I bake my own bread, so I know the amount of carlories, etc. in that.

I have eliminated cheese, sweets and deserts and go with fruit after meal.

I haven't progressed to vegan; I still do eggs and milk.

For some reason, I am not seeing a decline in weight.

Hi Urquhart, I've looked through my dad's The South Beach Diet book and it really doesn't mention vegetarianism, but apparently the South Beach Web site talks a lot about it. I'm not a South Beacher thus, am not a member of their site and can't see what they have for members-only. If you're willing to sign up, you might be able to browse the site and discussion forums. I did find the following link out in the Internet, though, and perhaps it will be of help or interest.

I, too, am trying to eat well and exercise more, and weight loss (such as it is) seems very slow or possibly non-existent thus far (I don't own a scale so I go more by measurement/inches rather than weight). I find that I feel awfully good, though, so I take that as a good sign and try to be patient and look at it as a long-term thing, rather than "I hope I can shed 10 pounds this month" or etc. Sometimes the patience part is hard. ;)

I've lost weight successfully using Weight Watchers in the past. Some tweaking is required for vegetarian-ising recipes and menu plans, but it's not difficult. I'm in Australia, so I'm not sure if it's the same where you live, but there is an online version of the program that you can do. It's not free though. They do have free community forums, however, where people can share ideas, recipes, etc.

Also, here are a couple of low-fat vegetarian/vegan recipe sites that you might find useful -

Good luck :)

My thanks to everyone for their feedback; most appreciated.

I will followup on the websites that are cited.

And yes Essa I totally agree; the patience part is the hard part.

I just keep telling myself that everytime that I am tempted to eat something...that little streams can quickly become big rivers....

patience, discipline, exercise, and not being influenced by what others eat around me....

Again thanks.

Dr. McDougall has a great program at http://www.drmcdougall.com/. I lost a lot of weight on this program. The best part is that if you follow the guidelines, you can eat as much as you want. When I first started eating that way, I felt hungry a lot, so I ate a lot, thinking I would worry about weight loss once I adjusted to the way of eating. But I lost weight anyway. So, it's worth a try.

Here is an entry I recently added in the LT Sustainability group that directly addresses your question about weight loss. All of the books I recommend, while primarily focused on heart health, also support weight loss and healthy weight stabilization:

Edit from May 2015: I just added a vegan-friendly cookbook to this "Sustainable Cooking" thread in the LT Sustainability group.

myfitnesspal.com is free and enjoyable to use. You enter your current weight and your goal weight, and it gives you a daily calorie target (which you can adjust if necessary). It has a massive food database so you can find and enter the foods you eat, to give you an accurate calorie count of where you're at for that day. It also tracks fiber, protein, carbs, etc. And there are message boards where people post often.
