Does anyone have advice for good books on R, talking both about the software and standard statistical techniques? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

If not, it might answer your question. (I've ported a single R program to perl, so I'm very far from an expert on R.)

At the moment I'm reading "Introductory Statistics with R" by Peter Dalgaard. It's very readable and covers all the basics well. "The R Book" by M. J. Crawley is a decent reference. Crawley's other book "Statistics: An Introduction using R" appears to be simply an abridged version of "The R Book"; it's covers some more advanced techniques than Dalgaard's book but the continuity is a little botched.

If you're just starting I'd go for Dalgaard's book.
