January 3 is the birthday of J.R.R. Tolkien.
On this day, the Tolkien Society reminds everyone to make a birthday toast to the Professor.
On January 3rd Tolkien fans around the world are invited to raise a glass and toast the birthday of this much loved author at 21:00 (9 pm) your local time.
The toast is "The Professor".
For those unfamiliar with British toast-drinking ceremonies:
To make the Birthday Toast, you stand, raise a glass of your choice of drink (not necessarily alcoholic), and say the words 'The Professor' before taking a sip (or swig, if that's more appropriate for your drink). Sit and enjoy the rest of your drink.

Thanks, Ivriniel. I meant to remind folks, and then I completely forgot. If he were still alive today, 'The Professor' would be celebrating his Eleventy Fifth Birthday!
I'll be toasting, but probably not on the stroke of 9:00. I'm afraid that if I wait, I'll forget.

#2, I am afraid I will forget too. So......

I can't believe I missed it!!! My son's birthday is also Jan. 3, and I knew he shared the day with the Professor, but my mind is just not what it used to be!

Don't feel too badly, hobbitprincess. I read the posts in here, and made a private toast with my tea. But I planned on making a big announcement at dinner time, and having the whole family raise their glasses, and I completely forgot.

It's that time of year again!
Don't forget to toast The Professor... whether you've read the book once or more times than you can count, or, *gasp* not even once!

I sensed a little jibe there; probably due to my earlier confession about reading LoTR in the 1970s...and not since.
Regardless, I will toast The Professor. :-)

>9 pgmcc: Not really. We have multiple people in this group who claim that one read was (more than) enough, and some who have never made it through at all.

To the professor with gratitude for his work -- not just LOTR, but also for The Silmarillion and the miscellaneous other works enjoyed upon multiple occasions.
