My mom is reading Grettir the Outlaw by S. Baring-Gould to my kids, from a copy she was given by her father in 1942. The touchstones are not reflecting this accurately however. Mr. Baring-Gould was an English school teacher who for his own enjoyment, translated the saga into English, then visited Iceland and all of the places mentioned in the saga in 1861. This book is the result, a thrilling story; it is not a direct translation of the saga however.

Does anyone have any suggestions for audio recordings of the sagas done in Icelandic? I'd love to hear some authentic readings.

Dear ArtDecade: I too would love to hear "authentic readings". I will do some looking. I hope that you will leave a post if you come across something. Our son, Luke, and I have been reading from Heimskringla by Snorre Sturlason. It seems to echo the tragedies of the various kings of Israel that are recorded in I & II Kings and I & II Chronicles in the Old Testament. Being of Norwegian descent, it is a fascinating read for me.

If you just want to listen to spoken Icelandic (sagas or not), go to http://ruv.is/ (Icelandic Broadcasting Corporation) and look for podcasts.
