So, I just wanted somewhere to angst about the frustration of searching Dewey numbers. I started out with my local library service, and was horrified to discover they only offered a "Dewey browse" option.

Then I went onto my employer - a national institution but one that exists to serve the public nonetheless. I remember our shiny new catalogue having some great features (and it does!). The one issue is that being such a large institution, we use prefixes for size as well as to distinguish between Australian and non-Australian content.

Unfortunately, the search doesn't like that - in order to get accurate data I would have to search for each number on it's own as well as with each of the prefixes - then total the results.

With the heat I'm a little frustrated, but this project is awesome, and I'm good at searching. I fully intend on picking someone's brains at work tomorrow for possible solutions. Until then I'm going to check out what other Australian public libraries are doing - perhaps they have friendlier catalogues.

Once I finish unpacking my books I want to make some tentative second level categories for metaphysics & occult, if I can deprogram dewey from my brain for long enough...
