Does anybody rate this book ?

I have been reading it and was really shocked by the 30-minute Down they recommend !

My doggie still hasn't got the hang of Down, so to try to physically place her into a Down position just becomes a struggle. I understand that the point is to establish your dominance over your pet, but I love my dog and feel uncomfortable about the idea of physically and mentally 'breaking' her like this :(

Can anyone recommend persevering with it ?

Is the command to have your dog lay down for 30 minutes? I am imagining putting the dog in a down position at your feet while waiting for an appointment in the vet's office and having that last 30 minutes. That should not be asking to much of an adult dog although I imagine it would be a bit too much for a puppy.

In terms of training, I believe you can work up to it. Shorter downs first, etc.

I do not like to force something I want my dog to do happily either. I just went to a seminar by Sue Ailsby, and while I don't know much about clicker training, I like her philosophy of problem solving without force. Her website is http://www.dragonflyllama.com/ because she trains llamas with clickers, too! The concept is that you see something you like and reward that.

If you are training for the Canine Good Citizen from the AKC, I don't think it requires a 30 minute down.

Hope this helps.

There are many different types and reasons for training. I can understand a dog trained to seek live victims in a rubble; or labs trained to retrieve birds for hunters; or police dogs; dogs trained to find lost pets; you know the list probably better than I do. Some of these training regimes may call for a 30 minute down. I continue to assert it is not an unreasonable goal but I think the dog owner needs to have clear reasons for training a dog to do something which runs somewhat counter to their nature.

Just noticed this thread and thought I'd add my two cents. The AKC's CGC Test does not require a 30 minute down. I'm not sure it even required a down at all - it may have just been a choice between a sit or a down stay - it's been 5 years since my dog passed it so I'm not quite sure without looking it up.

As for training for a down, have you tried luring with a treat - just bringing a treat down and forward so your pup has to go into a down to reach it and then saying down when they do it. It generally works like a charm! Good luck!

Oh and as for the book, it's pretty basic but it does go through all of the steps of the CGC test.
