YA Lit - Post Apocalyptic Kids Books

Okay, I'm going to sound like a total freaker, but I love YA lit that deals with post apocalyptic backdrops, like the Tripods trilogy and Winter of Magic's Return. There's just something eerie and cool about the genre that I really get into.

Does anyone else have an interest in this?

Am I the only one? ;-)

And can anyone recommend any similar books?

Oh, I love post-apocalyptic YA lit too! There's a whole thread about it in the Read YA Lit group, and the book we're doing for the discussion there this month, Uglies, is post-apocalyptic.

I read very little YA stuff, but I did want to see what passed for YA SF these days (as opposed to Fantasy). I read all three Scott Westerfeld books, Uglies, Pretties and Specials - I didn't intend to but they were somewhat addictive. And I did like them all. That said, I thought they seemed a little too "dumbed down" in places or maybe a little too silly, particularly with regards to "New Pretty Town". But he didn't need to convince us the place was desireable but he needed to convince us that the teens in the book found it desireable, and he succeeded in doing so. Since SF is the literature of ideas, I think there are some fine, discussable (is that a word) ideas in the books.

Better still, are two juvenile chapter books (4th - 6th grade); post-apocalyptic also, City of Ember by Jeanne Duprau and its sequel (the name escapes me for the moment). I don't want to give out any spoilers but between the two books, which I listened to on audio, there is a great story and there are some terrific discussion points.
