Hi Everyone,
I just switched over from the 50 books challenge to this one. I just joined LT last year and my goal was to read 50 books per year. This year, I've more than doubled that. But many of my books were short ones, like Agatha Christie mysteries.

I've tagged all the books I've read this year (so far). Here's the link:
http://www.librarything.com/catalog/amwmsw04&tag=Read+2008
I'm logging books as I read them and then releasing them via bookmooch or paperbackswap. I'm only keeping a select few books that I know I will re-read, due to space limitations.

I like this group - you guys seem to be very active posters. I also like that you have a thread called "The Kitchen". Are you going to create a new challenge for 2009? If so, I want to make sure I join that one. I'm only going to shoot for 75 books in 2009, since I don't want to put undue pressure on myself.

Happy reading,
Angela

This a very addictive group!

Hi Angela, and welcome! I think you will find this a very friendly group (and quite chatty too). Be prepared for lots of questions about what you've been reading.

Do give us a selection of your reading this year to get us started! I believe that there is an idea to post some favourite (and least favourite) reads soon as we get towards the end of 2008, so that might be a good place to start...

Thanks for the nice welcome!
I didn't feel like typing a list of all 113 books I've read in 2008, so I put a link to my "Read 2008" books in my first post. Does that link work for you or do I have to do it differently?
I'm still new to this - I don't even have touchstones down yet, haha!

Happy Reading,
Angela

hi Angela

I went through your list and I put Toxic parents by Susan Forward on my library list.
We could have used some of the de-clutter books years ago, but got rid of the clutter all by ourselves ;-)
Do you have a Maltese dog?

Yes, we have a maltese puppy. He's 4 months old. Our first Maltese died suddenly at only 13 months of age - this past July. Fortunately we were able to get one from the same people in October.
I have a lot more decluttering books - I love them. They are inspiring. At first friends laughed at me because I had so many decluttering books - aren't they clutter then? But I explained that as soon as I read them - they go out of my house via Bookmooch or Paperbackswap!

Toxic Parents was great! Absolutely fascinating. Even if you have 'good' parents it is still compelling reading if you like that sort of subject.

Hey - I got a touchstone to work - woohoo!

Thanks and happy reading,
Angela

Hi Angela! Welcome! I'm glad that you've decided to join us. You've read some interesting things this year. What did you think about So Many Books? I like to read books about reading.

Also, I noticed that you read Kids Say the Darnedest Things this year. My grandparents had that book on their shelf when I was a kid. I remember reading parts when I was visiting and thought it was funny then. Does it stand the test of time?

Wow, thanks for all the welcomes - my thread had slipped so far down the list that I didn't realize I got more replies. That's what happens when you find an active group like this one I guess!

Porch_Reader, I liked So Many Books, but not as much as some other 'Books about Books.' I have a large TBR stack of 'Books about reading and books.' I learned a lot of stuff about the publishing industry through that book. Sometimes I had to re-read a sentence or two because I found it confusing, but I think this might be because this book is a translation. But I'm glad I read it. It's a short read too. It was interesting and made me think twice about my dream to become a writer!! He kept stressing about how many people want to be published - how many books are published each year, and how hard it would be to sell enough to make a living. Basically, if I want to become a writer - I learned not to think about being published but just to write for my own sake. If it gets published one day, so be it.
Anyway, I can't get enough of those type of books. Which ones have you enjoyed most so far?
As far as Kids Say the Darnedest Things, it was a little dated but there is a timeless quality to Linkletter and Schultz that is always touching and amusing. I laughed out loud a few times.

Oh, and by the way - I'm up to 118 books for 2008 now, yay. :D

Thanks for the support!

Oh. this will date me, but my younger sister was a "panelist" on the Art Linkletter show for the section on Kids Say the Darnedest Things. It was an eyeopener section of the show for many adults!

>12 BookAngel_a: - Angela - I've read a couple of good books about reading. Blackdogbooks recommended Reading Like a Writer, which I read earlier this year and really enjoyed. Last year, I read So Many Books, So Little Time. It was after reading that one that I started my own reading journal. But I'm always on the lookout for others!

One of my favourites - Francis Spufford: The Child that Books Built. I really enjoy Spufford's style - I also loved Backroom Boys which came next. Both quite British books, but I think the author's enthusiasm communicates beyond the culturally-specific references.

The Library at Night is one I've also had on my list for a while now.

14 & 15 - thanks for the suggestions! I've wishlisted them on bookmooch and paperbackswap. You must have good taste because there are a lot of people on those sites that want those books!

Oh, wow! You've definitely surpassed the 75 book challenge. Congrats! :) Are you going to shoot for the same next year?

Thank you, saraslibrary. Unfortunately I do not expect to read this many books next year! This year I had some injuries come up (right now I have a broken ankle) so I was housebound a little more than usual. But the good part is, I got more reading done - yay!!
Next year I'm shooting for between 75 and 100. I'd be happy with 75. This year I shot for 50...well...I definitely made my goal! :D

Ouch on the broken ankle! But I can see where that could be an advantage, too. :)

My 2009 goal's kind of the same. I had wanted to reach 100 this year, but I fell short at around 75 (so far). I'll probably do the same next--start with 50 and work my way from there. Good luck!

#18 & 19: The great thing about this group is that we really do not concentrate on the numbers, although we certainly believe in congratulating people on reaching a goal. We are more interested in discussing each others books and engaging in conversation about them.

I hope you both plan on joining us in 2009!

Thanks, alcottacre - I already joined for 2009. I started my own thread over on the new group. And thanks to The Tortoise, I made a ticker for my '09 thread!!

Hi
Congratulations on not only accomplishing, but surpassing the 75 book challenge.
alcottacre is right. There is no pressure to finish this goal, please do join us in 2009.

Sorry to hear of your broken ankle..ouch!
