Here are some recommendations:

:-) To elaborate
The Little House books in order (which deal with South Dakota):
By The Shores of Silver Lake - deals with the move to Dakota Territory, the establishment of De Smet township (Huron county), the building of the railroad.
The Long Winter - a very harsh Dakota prairie winter. Harrowing, but not as horrifying as the truth of that winter either.
Little Town on the Prairie - the town grows up.
These Happy Golden Years - and so does the author.
The First Four Years - farming in the late 1880s, and how Dakota Territory suffered (leading to the dustbowl of the 1890s)

Related non-fiction:
Looking For History on Highway 14 by John E. Miller

I'd suggest Bachelor Bess: The Homesteading Letters of Elizabeth Corey as a non-fiction option. An incredible account of a young woman who leaves her home in Iowa to homestead, alone, on the South Dakota prairie. I read this years ago, and still marvel at how she survived.
