Hi, Kevin, thanks for inviting me. I took the liberty of starting a general thread as a good place for introductions and non-nudging comments (rather than clutter up nudging threads). For those who don't know me, I'm Lois.

Admittedly, I love to nudge (it's the former bookseller in me) but when on the receiving end, I tend to file away nudges in the back of my mind to inform my decisions as I go along. My TBR pile is probably 800 books or so, even the immediate 'pile' would not fit in a picture. It's a free-range TBR pile (it roams freely all over the house). Beyond the research I'm doing (by day), I'm totally an impulse reader (by night).

So, if you don't mind, I won't request to be nudged right now but will wander around and throw a nudge or two in from time to time.

Hello everybody. My name is Paola and I joined upon Karen's (kiwidoc) suggestion.
Like Lois, my TBR piles are many and scattered all over the house, hence the impossibility of taking a picture. I must say that I choose what to read according to my mood and, yes, impulse.
May I also temporarily join the group of those who are just going to be present, give an occasional nudge and enjoy what the others have to say?

Hi! My name is Miriam, and I have too many TBR piles to photograph. I will try to list some of them.

Another former bookseller here! I'm Carolyn, and I'm never happier than when I'm nudging.

I won't be in a position to start new fiction until December, since I have yet to read another 20ish German novels for a prize I'm judging, however I have a handful of non-fiction titles that take my fancy... but which one first???

Photo coming shortly on a new thread (and not on my profile page, which I'm too lazy to maintain!)

Nudger or nudgee - everyone is welcome. Nudging is just a little pastime that came to mind as a way of facilitating chat about reading. I've neglected my LT "duties" for quite a while and I think I'd like to get a bit more active again.

I suspect many people have TBR lists that run into hundreds! So many books... so little time. I shall try to refresh my TBR stack photo with four or five new books each time I start reading a new book. Otherwise it would become rather stale.

I'm still playing about with the concept of nudging tbr stacks and I am interested in any ideas other people have for improving or refining the idea.

Hello, my name is Karen and I am always delighted to be nudged into reading.
Thanks Kevin, for starting a group on such a great premise.

I wonder if someone with great Geek skills could let me know how to put photos on a thread as Carolyn has done.

A couple of thoughts - I wonder if it is easier to read off a thread that a profile page, Kevin - if it can be done with ease?

Also, a few people have commented that they have not got their digital camera up to speed for this - so I thought those people could simply post a list until they can deal with their electronic issues??

Visualizing the books is a brillant idea - interesting how different the covers look in England.

Thanks, Paola, for the invitation--this group looks like a good idea. And, since about half my books are unread as yet, this will help me make those hard choices! Hello. I am Christina and I am a biblioholic.

Welcome, Christina. I look forward to nudging a book on your tbr stack!

Karen - I think you are right - putting the book stack photos on a thread, like Carolyn has done, would be better. It's nice to keep your profile photo for something personal - I love the blue of Christina's (christiquc) morning glories!

Hi, I'm Joyce. Thanks for inviting me here, Karen! I look forward to taking a photo of a portion of my TBR mountain later this month (after this term's reading is over). I find these pictures of books oddly fascinating. I'm going to post the photo within my thread using PhotoBucket ( http://photobucket.com/). It's easy to create your free account and upload your photos . . . I can't remember the steps to get them into LT though. Maybe someone else remembers? I think you follow the directions that they give for uploading photos to EBay, but it's been a while since I've used it, so I'm not sure.

I'm Deborah, and I'm getting nudged out of my house by my sprawling TBR piles, stacks, bags, boxes, and shelves.

I am so busy with work in these last weeks of the semester that I don't have much free time for personal reading, so I won't be posting a TBR photo until December, I'm afraid. By I'll stop by and give a nudge or two when I can.

I see that others have managed to post pictures to their thread. I have only managed the post the link. Could someone tell me how this is done? I tried the a href link and this did not work.

Editado: Nov 1, 2008, 1:14 pm

It wasn't too bad once I figured out flickr.

I put my photo in flickr, then there is an option called "All sizes" on top of the photo once it's been entered. If you click on that it gives you the html to copy over. It worked first go.

I think photobucket might be easier but I can't remember my password!

Hello, my name in Jane, and I dare not count how many books I own that I have yet to read.

My problem is exacerbated by living near very good private and subscription libraries, whose books I must read in case they disappear from the shelves!

I will endeavour though to bring selections of my books together from time to time to receive nudges though and I will gladly nudge books that I have enjoyed for others.

Thank you Christina for inviting me.

A belated hello from me and thanks for all the nudges already! I'm Cushla and I'm running out of bookshelves. It was so cool to get up this morning and have 7 replies on my thread. (It makes up for the fact that it was, yet again, 5.30 and the Doodlebops were singing their song.)

Thanks Karen for inviting me!

18Cariola
Nov 1, 2008, 1:48 pm

Oh, I think you have to modify the size on photobucket first, then post the href to the size you want to post.

I do see those "Click here to enlarge" links, but I'm not sure how to do that.

Hi, I'm Cyrel and thank you to Karen for inviting me. My book piles are arranged on the top of various pieces of furniture. I will take this opportunity to learn how to post photos, but at the moment will just nudge but not be nudged just yet.

Nov 2, 2008, 1:55 pm

In photobucket one can copy and post the html code to post your photo in actual size (or, as some have mentioned, you can resize the photo first) OR, for a clickable thumbnail, you need only check off the little box on the bottom left under your picture (when you are viewing the album page). Then scroll down to the bottom of the page and click on the "Generate html and img code" bar/button on the right. Then copy and paste the code in the top box into your post. The thumbnail feature allows you to leave your photo at full size in the album.

Thus you will get this:

Instead of this:

Yes, this is one of my many, many TBR (and recently read) piles, this one next to the bed. All those books look like they'd like to jump in bed with me, don't they?

Hi, I'm Rachel, here thanks to Lois (avaland). I joined the group a couple of days ago, and even took a photo of a pile of books, which I haven't managed to do anything with yet. Hello, another Rachael here (with an extra 'a'!). I've already nosed through everyone else's 'stacks' and managed to resist adding my own nudges so far as I wanted to do you all the courtesy of posting my own thread for potential retaliations ;-)

I thought I wouldn't be up to doing that for a while, as my current and next books are already sorted (library loans) - but it has been so much fun looking at all of yours I don't think I can resist! It just might take me a while to act on the nudging.

Editado: Nov 5, 2008, 2:04 am

It would be sort of nice to know that being a bloke and reading are not two entirely incompatible pastimes!

It's bad enough convincing people that it is possible to read books and come from the Black Country (my particular area of England - widely mocked for the stupidity of its inhabitants and their unfortunate, unattractive accents - I would protest at the former but sadly concede the latter) but to find that the stereotypical concept that blokes only ever read car and girlie mags being, however tenuously and indirectly, confirmed by LT is a bit depressing.

As a bloke I can't say I'm particularly interested in cars but I do like football (soccer to our US friends and Wolverhampton Wanderers or Wolves is my local team - hence the moniker), beer, Bob Dylan (hence the moniker) and women (not necessarily in that order).

Mind you, as I live and work in predominately female environments, it's no surprise to find a similar bias in LT.

Now why would I complain about that? (as long as you don't leave your tights drying in the bathroom - in return I'll promise not to leave the loo seat up.)

Like Rachael (flossiet - welcome by the way!) I've been intrigued by our commonly shared book list - it does seem to have a particularly unique flavour.

Just posting to confirm the existence of another man on Librarything (and in this group).

-->43 dylanwolf: As someone brought up in Hertfordshire but transplanted to Booksloth's part of the world (well, Bristol, anyway), I can state categorically that the accents are fantastic. Have to agree with Dylanmwolf about the Black Country accent, though. I wonder if anyone has ever written a novel in Black Country dialect, a la Trainspotting?

#49> No apologies, please. This conversation is fascinating.
The first time I came to the UK, I went to visit my penfriend Dorothy. She lived (and still lives) in Wigan, so the first accent I was exposed to was not what you call the Queen's English!

Here I am - thanks for the invites! I haven't been on LT so much over the past couple of weeks, as I have been spending (looks downwards, shuffles feet nervously from side to side) lots of time writing.

What's more, I don't have a digital camera - I'll see, probably at the weekend, whether my cellphone can produce a good enough outcome to post something here. I have two TBR piles at the moment, one of poetry, one not, and they haven't been getting much attention while I work my engrossed way through Elizabeth Jane Howard's Cazalet Chronicles (The Light Years, Marking Time, Confusion, Casting Off). Nearly finished now.

But anyway, thanks for asking - I'll see what I can do!

Two hours west of Toronto, in a small town without bookstores. What a terrific group to have stumbled upon! I'm Marilyn, work in a library and have loads of TBRs - one of the best things about putting my books on LT is coming across books I'd forgotten all about in the second rows of various shelves. One of the hardest things about working in a library is not checking out every interesting book that passes my way. I'm always afraid that once they're back in the stacks I'll never see them again. One of the best parts of my job is getting to know patrons well enough to do book nudging on the job :o) Looking forward to finding new titles and sharing ideas.

Welcome Carrie. I hope you will have as much fun as we do, which is A LOT!

Hi. I'm Liz and I noticed some folks in Virago green skulking around a woodshed, so I followed them and ended up here. I don't exactly have a TBR pile or an already read pile, although I do have a "never going to read that one again -- get it out of here" pile! Unfortunately, that last pile is not nearly large enough to keep space open on my shelves, so there are many piles of books at my house. Nudge them and they fall over, always exposing some new gem.

Hi, i am cornpuff12 and i am new here. I am hoping for some nudging, but if none of you have any time, that is okay. oh, and if you get to it, please base it on my library, or if you don't feel like searching through it, just give me a book the you really enjoyed and tell me what it is about. if i liked it, i will tell you after i am done reading it. thanks.

Start a new thread here, cornpuff and we'll nudge away, having happily browsed through your library (we can't promise not to steal any books though). I just have and I'm guessing you're not a wrinkly.

I'll get my daughter, Rachael, onto the case for some nudges, it would be fabulous to get some young people on board too!

By the way that's not to imply that everybody here is old you understand... err (put down the spade, Kevin, and back away from the hole)

So, Cornpuff12, don't forget to join the nudgers group! You'll be very welcome and I know there are lots of friendly people here who will help guide to the kind of books you like to read.

Has anybody got any ideas about how we might accomodate and welcome younger nudgers?

Oh, hai. I had been lurking, and joined a couple days ago. I recognize a lot of names---hello, dear friends, and those who may become friends. I'm Linda, and LT is the biggest temptation in my life. I am drawn to it when I should be doing many many other things, some of which I'm being PAID to do. My TBR piles are everywhere, and in constant flux. I'm rarely at a loss for what to read next, but I'm very happy to take recommendations, so I'll try to post a photo of some of my unread treasures soon, and see what kind of input I get. Meanwhile, I will inflict my own opinion on other members' threads. You will find a strong inclination toward the Americans in my nudges, but I do read widely and much more globally since LT came into my life.

Kevin, I can't find the Teen Book Nudgers Group on the general group page (probably being stupid....) Can you put a link to it on our group profile page? It would be nice to link these two groups somehow? (slap me down if I'm out of order here)

Another silent lurker here and a wave from the woodshed! Still rather content on the sidelines and will pop in for a nudge or two. Thank you Kevin, for creating such a lively and interesting group!

I have been 'lurking' in the "Teenage Book Nudgers" group, which my son also joined, created by cornpuff12. I just want to make sure no adults with unpleasant intentions join it. I just posted a message, as I saw that a member (igeorgev) posted as well, at this time of the day when he should be in school.

Our young friend cornpuff12 already posted her name, age and, by mentioning her father's, her last name. Hopefully, all LThingers are like us, but I am always a bit worried when children are part of internet groups.
While my son is 14 and definitely not naive, I am concerned about our cornpuff12.
Forgive me for ranting, but I am sure you understand.

aluvalibri, I've been keeping a silent eye on that one for anything that seemed amiss as well. It's great to see youngsters here but you're right, sometimes youngsters give away too much. Also, some LTers get snippy with the youngsters. I'm guessing the same things red-flagged in your head when you read the posts ...

By the way, I'm klarusu and I'm a biblioholic ... my 'in progress' pile is too big to be nudged right now but I'll be up for nudging before long ... I just can't help it ;)

As the parent of a child who can't wait to be old enough to become a member here, I think I'll keep a maternal eye on them as well. You just never know...

If I see a who I believe is younger person posting personal info, I send them a PM and talk about it with them. I think because it's a book site that people feel secure here.

My 10 year old is waiting to join! He'll have to read over my shoulder for a while, though. I thought the lower age limit was 13 -- am I wrong? Is it 12?

Yes, it is 13. I have no idea how cornpuff managed to get away with that.

I just finished reading one of the threads in the Teenage Nudgers group, and I can tell you that they are really cute!

Hello, after lurking for a while, then posting for a bit, I'm hooked, so I've joined. :-/

Hi, I'm a LTaholic as well as a biblioholic - past saving, I think :-)

My TBR pile is all over the house, since I have a policy of buying an interesting book when I find it, since later when I need it, or have time to get to it, I won't be able to find a copy. There, is that a justification, or what?

Cheers!

Welcome to Book Nudgers, staffordcastle/joiedelivre (love that moniker!). You'll be less than interested to know that I come from the county of Staffordshire in England (the part I live in is now called the West Midlands), our county town is Stafford and it has a castle (this is Merry Olde Englande, after all!). Stafford Castle! Here is a picture of it.

Thank you, dylanwolf - I saw that you mentioned you were from Wolverhampton! I have not made it to Stafford yet, but this is indeed where my user name is derived from. One day ...

If you look at my library you will see that I have a lot of books on English history. (Can you say rabid Anglophile?) You'll see that I even have a tag for Stafford!

Welcome, staffordcastle / joiedelivre! (nice photo, dylanwolf)

avaland, love the link! Some of the sculptures are absolutely beautiful. I think I recognize some of Jim Rosenau's work from This Into That. I have this bookshelf from him:

Clearly I am (as we say on this side of the pond) "taking coals to Newcastle" (although in this case I mean Newcastle-Under-Lyme not Newcastle-upon-Tyne). It means the same as "teaching your Grandmother to suck eggs"... "Preaching to the converted"? Well... telling you something you already know, my apologies.

>112 avaland: Lois (avaland), some of those sculptures are really beautiful. But they're made out of (gulp!) books! Keep calm, Kevin... I'm sure they're all remainders and written by Jeffrey Archer.

Can you imagine that whole tower made out of titles like The Well of Loneliness or I capture the Castle? On the other hand, I have read quite a few mass market paperbacks that would be improved by being turned into furniture, and if some creative artist could come up with a beautiful and inventive use for outdated software "help" books, they would be doing the world a service.

I think that all objects are adaptable - even books. Reduce, reuse, recycle. I have no problem with giving new life to books that are languishing. (Especially computer books that can so quickly become obsolete ;)

I'm going to be nudging, not a nudgee: I have no books TBR. I was given three on Tuesday and I scoffed them all. I am quite envious of these piles of TBR books, I have to re-read most of the time (I have no space for books in my ship. Sob.)

Hello from an occasional message poster.... My house is overfull of books I haven't yet gotten around to reading. I'm trying to read as many as I can and pass them along before we move in a few months. I'll post a nudge request as soon as I get a camera. In the meantime I'm enjoying the site!
