Anyone interested in a late 2008 group read?
We had talked about possibly doing The Robber Bride or Alias Grace next but I'm up for whatever others might be interested in. To review, here's her fiction list (includes her short fiction collections):
FICTION
The Edible Woman (1969)
Surfacing (1972)
Lady Oracle (1976)
Dancing Girls (1977)
Life Before Man (1979)
Bodily Harm (1981)
Murder in the Dark (1983)
Bluebeard's Egg (1983)
The Handmaid's Tale (1985) * DONE!
Cat's Eye (1988)
Wilderness Tips (1991)
Good Bones (1992)
The Robber Bride (1993)
Alias Grace (1996)
The Blind Assassin (2000)
Oryx and Crake (2003) * DONE!
The Penelopiad: The Myth of Penelope and Odysseus (2005)
The Tent (2006)
Moral Disorder (2006)
a new novel! (early 2009)

Even though I've been totally lame about the last two, I really would like to do one. I'm hoping life will be quieter then than it was in August. I still haven't read anything but The Handmaid's Tale, so I'm up for anything. Of the two you mentioned, I already have Alias Grace (along with Cat's Eye, Dancing Girls, The Blind Assassin and Penelopiad) but I am not averse to buying/mooching something else as well.

Like DevourerOfBooks, I hope to find the time to participate this round. I also missed out on the other two.
I have all of those listed, except for The Tent and Moral Disorder; and if we pick one of those, it would give me a good excuse to buy them, right? ;)

I am new to the group - I have read most of her recent novels, I would be interested in reading Surfacing. I think it is also listed in 1001 Books to read before you die too - so that would be a bonus for those of "doing" the list.

I vote for Surfacing too. I didn't get on with it first time round and I'd like to give it another go.

My top three are The Blind Assassin, Alias Grace, and Surfacing.
I've flaked out on the last two group reads as well (sorry!!!), but I really hope to join in this time. Avaland, thanks for helping to keep this board moving along :)

I think I might be more inclined to read something older than Blind Assassin, but things are leaning towards Surfacing anyway. . .
Hopefully, we'll hear from a few more. Will keep an eye out for any Atwood copies in the next couple of weeks of library sales (I found Surfacing at the last one and put on BookMooch), particularly the older titles.

As usual, I will probably read whatever is decided. :) Surfacing does sound intriguing. I would also be particularly interested in The Robber Bride or Alias Grace, which others have also mentioned.

I vote The Robber Bride or The Edible Woman.

I would love to join in and would be very happy to read (The Robber Bride) again with the object of having someone to talk about it with.

Sorry, wrong type of brackets for previous post - The Robber Bride.

OK, I think we are down to:
Surfacing and the Robber Bride
Why don't we do Surfacing first for Oct - Dec. and Robber Bride for Jan - March (or if we do the new book during that time, we would push it to the next slot)? If we do Surfacing first, some will be able to use it for the other challenge they are doing. It also would be a fairly short book to get through during some reasonably busy months (Oct - Dec). Everyone ok with that? Anyone horribly unhappy?
Anyone want to volunteer to start the threads when it comes time?

Surfacing sounds great to me!
14DevourerOfBooks
Sounds great - I just got Surfacing from BookMooch and Robber Bride isn't currently available.

I will look for both in the couple of library sales coming up in case anyone needs a copy (no guarantees though). Oh, I already said this!:-)

I own both, so I'm in. Won't have time to read until the end of term though, so I'll be in the December part of the Oct-Dec group read.

Woohoo-an Atwood I haven't read yet. :) This should be interesting. Plus, this will be one of hers that's almost exclusively about a woman-no speculative fiction this time around, right?

>12 avaland:, Sounds great, avaland. I can start the thread for Surfacing, but I will be travelling at the beginning of October, so it might be a very cursory start and it might come a little early. :)
