I just finished watching the movie "Into the Wild". Is the book any good? How much of it is derived from the diary of Christopher McCandless? Any interviews from the people he met along his journey?

Thanks!

The book Into the Wild is excellent. The only slight criticism I have of it is that towards the end the author starts to offer his opinion as to why things happened as they did.

It is very well researched and there is heaps of stuff about the people he met along the way. Chris's diary is obviously used but there is a lot of independant research as well.

As far as the movie goes I don't think it could have been done better. But having read the book first definitely enhanced the movie for me.

I agree with FeralPawn - the book was a great read, and goes beyond the movie by discussing other people who have done similar things. But don't take our word for it, there are many more LT reviews of it as well.

The chapter about others who did similar things was very strange, very "funny" in a weird sort of way, very much like watching a train wreck (a figure of speech of course; I've never watched train wrecks). The things these guys did (I do recall that they were exclusively guys) were, well, stupid.

It was the most interesting part of the book. I guess I just have an interest in the macabre.

I didn't read Into the Wild yet but I did read Krakauer's book Under the Banner of Heaven and it strikes me that your comment FeralPawn is justified. I think as a writer he is interested in exploring people who go to extremes and trying to understand them and the step to postulating the why of things is a tricky one.

I haven't seen the movie yet. I was afraid I'd find the film lacking after reading the book, which is a heartbreaking but good read. In discussing others who've pulled some of the same stunts, the author discusses the notion of male rite of passage. Very interesting, but haunting. Definitely a recommended read if you are interested in this sort of thing.

jbd1, I read the first 15 or so LT reviews. They are all excellent!
