I've been meaning to read Anais Nin for years--anyone have a suggestion where to start?

Hi,PhoenisTerran: I am currently reading " Anais", The Erotic Life of Anais Nin, a good biography of Anais Nin
( Femme Fatale, The Literary Seducer ) by Noel Fitch.
The book will captivate your reading interest to read a well-written biography of Anais Nin from her early years to her death covering the essence of her collected diaries. To read the many volumes of her diaries will be a challenge and need a lot of reading time. I have read her fiction, " Delta of Venus", a collection of short erotic stories. I give a rating of
3 1/2 stars out of 5 stars. A normal "erotica" kind of genre . O K. :-))

The film "Henry and June" was based on Nin and
Henry Miller's long-time relationship. Worth watching.

#5> Henry and June is responsible for the MPAA's creation of the NC-17 rating.

I'd read extracts of Nin's more erotic work, but I wasn't prepared for Seduction of the Minotaur, which surprised me by the occasional flash of really intense imagery. Not really erotica, but very enjoyable, and indicates her depth.

My first introduction to the world of Nin was through the movie "Henry and June" - I would love to add a copy of it to my library.

I have read A Spy in the House of Love and Little Birds just recently and Delta of Venus awaits on the shelf.

I felt Spy could be classed more as an exploration of the inner self rather than erotica as there was very little in it that could be considered "saucy". It was at times a little laboured yet it was captivating. Such a tangled web she wove!

Little Birds is a collection of sometimes very short stories that have definite erotic component - quite explicit in parts yet always done, as Kenny Everett would say, "in the best possible taste".

I will look for the bio mentioned in post #2 as the volumes that make up her published diaries would indeed be a labour of love to wade through.

I have just completed Delta of Venus over the weekend.

Again, this is a collection of short stories Nin wrote as a means of generating income when finances were tight.

I felt some stories were great in their beginning, but tailed off as if she became bored and didn't actually want to "finish" the story with the same level of polish as it began.

There were some notable exceptions where the work had a more consistent feel throughout.

The erotic content was explicit and in some areas touched on subjects that could have been regarded as venturing into areas generally not approved of in mainstream literature.
