Bostick Communications

I know that at least several of us have received e-mails from Bostick Communications. Does anyone know anything about them? I responded to the first three e-mails they sent, but haven't heard or received anything from them.

I know nothing about them except sometime in the last two weeks I started getting emails from them. I haven't requested any of their books though. No idea!

They also have a page of testimonials, many of them from authors who have used their services.

Personally, I'm holding off on responding to any of their offers for now.

Personally, I don't mind getting the emails if they're legit, but I have yet to hear of anyone actually receiving a book from them. Are the books being sent out?

I've received about 4 books from their efforts. I've forwarded the messages on to friends who have received books from them as well. So, they are legit!
I've never received a response that I'm getting the book, it just arrives in the mail.

I've received 2 children's books that I requested in response to the emails. One is The Rabbit and the Snowman, the other is Little Bit and Big Byte, a Day at the Beach (no touchstones, apparently).

I haven't requested any Bostick books other than these two aimed at kids.

The books both came to me directly from the author.

I have received one book Fiscal Pear and Shimmer in the Call of River Whale (My review of this interestingly odd little book will be forthcoming). I also requested The Organ Grinder and the Monkey and received a letter from the author letting me know this is forth coming. Some of the books seem a little off beat but I think that they are worth a look at if you are tired of the same old stuff. You never know you may find some real gems out there and discover an author before anyone else.

Now on the down side my TBR stack is so huge it is hard to devote much time to really unknown work. I think I can only handle them every so often.

It does appear that the books listed are legit. The authors contacted me really fast after my contact email with them.

I haven't requested any from them in a few months. I requested and received The Age of Innocence, Boone's Creek, and a few others.

Hm I guess it hasn't been that long since I've requested any... looks like the earliest was 7/2 so they really could still come. Glad to hear that some people have been successful!

I received both Fiscal Pear and Little Bit and Big Byte, and I have to say, based on those two, I probably won't request any more from Bostick!

I received a couple from responding to their e-mails a while back - Heavier Than Air by Nona Caspers and The Painter From Shanghai by Jennifer Cody Epstein. I never received a response to my e-mails either, but the books showed up on my doorstep pretty quickly.

In my experience, most books I've received are from new, self-published authors.

You have to look up the publisher. Although there are a lot of self-published authors promoted through Bostick, not all of them are.

I've requested three (Point of Entry, Will I Ever Know and The Front Porch project). The earliest was in late July, so there's still plenty of time for them to show up. I don't mind reviewing stuff by unknown authors, as long as its worth reading, so why not?

According to the TechForum entry, they send only religious spam, which doesn't seem to be the case from the emails I've seen. I also don't know if I would consider it necessarily spam, at least in my case. I have my email up on my blog and I've encouraged folks to contact me if they have books they'd like me to review, so if I get an email like that, I guess I asked for it.

I received today Scarecrow Finds a Friend by Blume J. Rifken which was offered by Bostick (mailed directly from the author). I opened it immediately and it is a beautiful, hardcover, full color, well done book. I read it to my kids as soon as I opened it and they wanted me to read it again.

I won't hesitate to take Bostick up on their offers if I think I'll enjoy it. They are legit.

here's my theory...Bostick sends the requests to the authors and they decide who to mail to. The books always arrive directly from the authors.

lovemybooks: I think you are correct on that, because whenever I have requested the books offered through Bostick the email confirmation comes from the author.

I've never gotten a confirmation email! But some of the books have shown up.

I've requested a couple of their books, but they did seem to have a run of Girl Power books there. Empowerment, ftr, is usually supposed to be the step beyond complaining. First you complain, then you do something. Problem is, most of the books get stuck in the "identify the sources" phase (in other words, the complaining. Complaining is much easier than doing.

This one doesn't actually look bad, to me.

I have been reviewing all the emails they have sent and comparing them with the books I have requested and I have to say that apart from the two children's books that I requested about a month ago (and received), I have not received ANY other book from them at all.

Anyone else?

I requested Nineteenth Street on 7/2, and When a Man Loves a Woman on 7/3. Never heard anything back either way, and never recieved them.

Did anybody else request these and get them? Just curious. They could still come.

I haven't seen anything else from bostick that looked interesting to me.

When did you request Why Women Shouldn't Marry? I requested that, but didn't hear back. I heard back about the male version, but haven't received it yet (though reviewing both would be an interesting contrast).

I requested The Front Porch Prophet on July 29 and received it yesterday. Its the first Bostick book I've received and I've requested maybe 6? The book is a very nice looking hard cover, autographed by the author, includes two bookmarks, and a very nice hand written note from the author. It was sent by the author, address label hand written, return address sticker looks like its his personal address, not some publicist type. I thought it sounded like a good book, its looks at least, don't disappoint. I may bump this one up the TBR pile, I'd be so excited to read something good from a nice guy trying to make it in the biz.

Klmnca, I think it is fun to read and review for "struggling" new writers as well. Since I know that they do their own mailing of the book and it is all out of their pocket I try to make sure that I really think I will like it. Starting out is hard in any business. (I am self-employed) I like to give people an assist if I can.

It's always the same e-mail to respond to. It should be posted further up in the thread. Bostick just sends out the e-mails, they have nothing to do with sending out the books (they're an intermediary between authors/publishers and whoevers on the other end of the mailing list).

It depends on the author as to whether they ship to Canada or not. I got one confirmation that I was getting a book (hasn't shown up yet) and I had sent them my address with CANADA in caps underneath it.

Edit: I must be thinking of another Bostick thread. The e-mail (I think) is ops@bostickcommunications.com.

37,40 - The Front Porch Prophet looks great - it was the first "adult" book I had requested in response to Bostick Comm. The other two were children's books - one was very good 4/5 stars. The second I didn't care for at all, still haven't written the review (my kids liked it well enough)

I was glad to see The Front Porch Prophet has started arriving in mailboxes, and that it looks as promising as the description!

I also requested The Front Porch Prophet, so I'm looking forward to receiving it. I've requested a few others, but that was the first one.

I did get an email response for that one, asking me to send a link to my review when I'd read it, but that's the only response I've received.

#48--I'm not shy at all about asking. I figure the worst that can happen to me is they delete my email, or turn me down flat, but I figure "nothing ventured nothing gained!" and I've gotten some books from authors that I never in a million years thought would bother to send me one. Successful cold requests include Chelsea Cain, Katharine Neville, Brad Meltzer, Tana French, Glenda Burgess, Hannah Tinti, Tom Sullivan, Doreen Orion, Ted Dekker, Evan Balkan and Tess Gerritsen. I know I'm forgetting somebody, but that's all I can remember right now.

I never cease to be amazed at first how accessible so many of these authors are, and second, how nice they are!! I'm having a ball doing this!

I got a letter from the author of 'The Organ Grinder and the Monkey' today, to let me know that it would be coming in a few weeks. I thought that was really sweet of him :)

Well, the first of two books I requested from Bostick came today! It's When a Man Loves a Woman. I requested it 7/3 and it looks like Bostick emailed the author/pub the same day. Then there's a letter dated 7/30. And finally it's postmarked 8/9. So they didn't move very quickly, but I'm glad I did finally get it.

In my experience, most of the books are sent out by the authors themselves and the emails are sent out by Bostick which I guess is their advertising company. I have so far not had any problems with them. Sometimes books get to you within days of your response to the emails sometimes, its takes weeks. I have never gotten an email from them telling me I would be getting a book. I just get it in the mail and sometimes by UPS. I send in my reviews when I write them(in addition to posting them on LT and Amazon) to someone called Ken(can't remember his last name right now). They never requested this but I just thought they may like to have it.

Be warned: While majority of the books I have received from them have been pretty good, some are just terrible, from the front cover to the actual content. But I do not know that this is the fault of Bostick.

on a writer's loop I'm on someone got an ad to advertise with Bostick. apparently they charge 175 dollars and promise authors they'll reach over 20,000 reviewers. Interesting side of things!

I've had a number of books from them. I would say 6 or 7 so far. That said, not every book I have requested has been sent.

In one of the parcels containing a book that was obtained through bostick, there was a print out of my email. The publisher/author had included it for me and from what I read on there all that happens when you respond is that bostick forwards it to the author/publisher in question with a statement saying you have requested the book.

It's then up to that contact to respond to you by sending the book or declining - or as it always seems, ignoring your request.

They do however take quite a time to arrive. I usually seem them arrive a good month /month and a half after I request a title.

Personally I like getting the mails and being made aware of certain books I wouldn't otherwise hear anything about but it's down to personal taste.

That's interesting. I've gotten all but 1 book that I've requested and they've all come VERY quickly! Maybe it has to do with the order that they receive emails or something.

I've received nothing that I've requested. I did get what I thought was a confirmation e-mail asking me to send them my review and post it on Amazon when I was done, but no book showed up.

Maybe they don't like Canadians (which is odd, because I always make sure that the book is being sold to Canadians on amazon.ca before I request).

I don't think there's a They who don't like Canadians, (how could there be? Canadians are cool!) but when the books are coming directly from the author, the extra postage costs may be prohibitive for many U.S. authors.

Actually I don't find the cost to mail to Canada to be that much. That's why my contests are usually open to Canadians unless the publishers are paying the shipping.

Well...I finally got something from them. Took so long that I had completely forgotten about it. Opened the package and was like "Huh? What's this?" before realizing what it must be. No packaging slip, no confirmation, no note. Just the book.

The Operation Bluelight email was interesting. I don't think an American wrote it. The PR email said "now top secret documents have emerged
revealing that the Ministry of Defense ran a covert project" The US does not have a "Ministry of Defense", unlike many other english speaking nations. At first I thought perhpahs the book was about the British, but the email also refers to the uniquley American Pentagon. Curious...

I don't know about all that, but I watched the YouTube movies on his site, and he is definately North American, US or Canada (and I'm leaning US), given his accent and language he uses.

Canada doesn't have a Ministry of Defense either. We have DND (Department of National Defence).

Bostick probably writes the press releases. You'd think they'd get something like that right though.

Yep I requested the thriller and got the same question, linked to my blog and just got a 'thanks' with no indication it would go to the author or any farther. It's the first one I've asked for.

Well, it wasn't the first one I requested. Strange, really. Maybe they just got back from summer vacation.

NiteStar, I got the same response when I requested The Next Falling Empire, a comprehensive plan for getting America back on track. It was kinda weird since they have sent me tons of books and never asked me where I post my reviews. In fact I was the one who initiated sending them my reviews cause I thought they may like to know where to find them. Also they never used to send me a response when I requested a book. I would either just receive the book or not get it at all. Suddenly, I got a response saying that my request has been forwarded to the author. Maybe they are instituted a change in policy.Who knows.

Maybe someone on Bostick is lurking on our thread and taking in suggestions. :) I can think of worse things.

I got the e-mail asking about my reviews when I first went to join the mailing list. The first book I requested 'Mexican Bowl Fishing' came today via MiB. It seems like 90% of the books they advertise are super-far-fetched or not at all my style... but who knows- might find a gem amongst them!

Well, considering they just added my email address and didn't actually ever ask if I wanted to be on this list, I'd assume they know where I'm posting my reviews. Maybe they're weeding it out.

Quadmama--I believe that a review here is as good as any. They have never told me where to post my reviews as other ARC providers sometimes do.

As to your friend, just tell him to respond to the email and tell them that he would like a review copy and include his name and address in the email.

I really have no idea how they got my email and started sending me book offers. I am not complaining cause I have gotten some really good books but I have to say that many of the books that I have gotten have been very odd and I am not so sure that they should ever have been published. But that is just my opinion and as much as they may not appeal to me, someone out there may really like them.

Do you think maybe the author, publisher, whomever requested this information? I'm wondering if Bostick even kept any info other than the addresses themselves, and perhaps a forward-thinking author asked for the info so they could weed out the best reviewers for their particular book. It would be smart on their part, if you ask me. That way, they're not wasting time and money sending a children's book to a reviewer whose blog consists mostly of political non-fiction, or vice versa, and isn't going to get the traffic they're really looking for.

BOSTON - Sept. 2, 2008 - He was considered a true gentleman whose face would color

when his troops cheered him. It was also said that he was the Union's greatest general

officer. "George H. Thomas," wrote author Henry M. Cist following Thomas' death, was

The stewardess returns to St Antony to be with Peter but she disappears as they plan to go

on holiday. As he joins in the search he realises that the problem is much more than just a

straightforward technical fault. Modern aircraft are incredibly safe and it takes all Peter's

skill and understanding of human nature finally to convince the accident investigators and

the airline and what really occurred.

The books are being sent out. I have requested quite a few for review. Granted maybe the way they handled getting their press releases out would be considered spam, but as far as I can see, they are legit. And I've gotten some pretty good books out of the deal.

I think the reason they are so sporadic is you're dealing with different authors, publishers, and/or publicists (even though all the emails are sent from one place). I've only requested one book, and I got it pretty quickly, but it came direct from the author. From what I can tell, Bostick passes the info along to whomever requested these emails be sent, and then it's up to them to get the books sent out. I imagine some are just more efficient than others.

I have requested several books from them and I haven't gotten any either. I sometimes get the email stating that I will be sent the book but so far, no actual books. :(

You don't need to ask for books to stay in the loop. Once you get on their list, they don't remove you unless you ask as far as I can tell.

I just got home from vacation and had Written in Blood by Sheila Lowe waiting for me. I love coming home to new books! It looks like this one came from the author. I don't remember requesting it (LOL, I think my subconscious is trying to sabotage my efforts to do something other than read and review books!) but it looks good.

Today I got Who Lied and Said we Left the GArden of Eden by Daniel Martin.

Anybody else think it's time for BOSTICK 2 thread.

I e-mailed to request an offered YA novel today and was asked if I would accept a PDF copy instead. I know I don't want a PDF copy- I'm not good at reading a lot on a computer screen and the book is 256 pages but feel rude saying no.... thoughts?

I requested the same book and was also offered a pdf. Here was my response:

"Unfortunately, I do not read large amounts of digital text very well and I do not have access to a printer in order to print an entire book from pdf. If a hard copy is unavailable, I understand--I'll just have to keep an eye out for it at my library.

I've received two books from them. It looks like the authors are just starting out. I've just read one so far, but likely wouldn't have bought it for myself.

I received one within a week of responding to the email. It's the 3rd in a trilogy and the first two were in our local library so she isn't a brand new author.

I don't have much of a problem with them. One of the books they emailed me about I asked for a review copy of, and I got it. I know the author, Kevin J Anderson, to be a well known author, as he was one of the authors who wrote the Dune series.

I've not always wanted the books they've emailed me about, but I don't mind receiving them. Press releases on books I may be interested in isn't spam in my opinion, they're welcome.

I only started getting emails from Bostick about... 6 months ago, and only last month did I finally find a few that I was semi-interested in. So I replied, but have not received any email back nor have I found the books in my mail box.

Has anyone requested (and received) Embellish by R.L. Sloan or The Peruke Maker by Ruby Dominguez?
