"No, I didn't finish the novel, though not for want of trying. Nothing to be done about that but push on when I return."

It's highly disappointing! I've taken to checking the website 3 times a day, even though I know he's in Portugal/Spain now and not writing.
5biblioholic29
So I just checked his sight for about the millionth time. I always first look at the "site last updated" thing and it had finally changed! Brief moment of excitement until I see that the only thing updated was "appearances". I DON'T CARE! STOP GOING PLACES AND FINISH THE BOOK!
Anyway, then I noticed the RSS feed, why hadn't I seen that before? Now I won't need to actually click on the site to know when the book is done. Yay!

Maybe it's the HBO series. But it's still no excuse. (When is that airing, btw?)

I have to confess that I'm starting to lose some sympathy, now. I can grant that although a lot more of Dance with Dragons was written as a part of A Feast for Crows before they were split, he has other projects, and three years does look like the average time between the other books (at least going by my paperback editions). My Feast of Crows is 2006, so a 2008 hardback would be right on time. Start missing deadlines, though, and I start getting annoyed.

Amazon's got the release date posted as April 30, 2013. . .Sigh. . .Time to pick up a few new epic fantasy authors in the meantime. . .

Yes, don't pay any attention to Amazon. GRRM's website is the best place to get the real scoop. I have the RSS feed to the Song of Ice and Fire update on my homepage, so as soon as he updates anything, I'll update it here!

I have a friend (claritysheen) who keeps up with GRRM's forum too. She posted the following:
Ok well . . . . . . . From someone who seems to know what they are talking about . . . . .
I dropped a comment to GRRM's girlfriend, Parris, about the date and after she stopped laughing she suggested that GRRM would take a look at it. The book is currently scheduled to come out spring 2009, as per his publishers' comments:
"George R R Martin has let us know that he will be later than expected delivering A Dance with Dragons, so we're sorry to say that we've had to postpone publication. Based on the new delivery date, we are very much hoping to be able to publish in Spring 2009. Thanks for your patience!" That comment is from A.Whithouse on the forum site.

I'll be keeping one eye firmly planted on GRRM's site over the next couple of days in hopes that we'll get a decent update (since it's been a year!). Should one appear, I will of course link it for anyone who doesn't obsess enough to have an RSS feed and still check the actual site 5 times a day. :)
16biblioholic29
GRRM just posted a not-a-blog entry about Dance with Dragons. It's worth a read.
17littlegeek
How depressing. Why would you write a blog post talking about how you are an utter failure at meeting deadlines, saying you'll never give the world a publication date again, AND THEN GIVE ANOTHER PUBLICATION DATE???
This does not bode well.
Even worse: Sansa will not appear in DWD. Does that mean that "book 4" has morphed into 3 separate books now?
If there's no Tyrion, I won't be reading it.

Getting more "Wheel of Time"-like all the time, isn't it? After reading the blog post, I decided not to read any more of the books until the end of the series, supposing it ever comes. My kids were babies when the last book came out, and now they're two-thirds of the way through kindergarten, for crying out loud.

I found a work associate reading A Game of Thrones and told her to be prepared to wait on the fifth book her reply was "by the time I finish the first four book Dance with Dragons will be out".
Yeah right! I hope she's a real slow reader.
From Amazon: This title will be released on September 29, 2009

Ignore that, Amazon will keep pushing it back and back until it actually comes out. GRRM's site still has no date, so there isn't one.
And you're right...it'll be best for your associate if she's a sloooooooooow reader!

Okay, no it's not done yet, HOWEVER, GRRM has passed on 1100 pages of manuscript to his publisher. Let's pause to enjoy the brief moment of hope and excitement!
22littlegeek
The longer it takes, the less excited I am. He says it will probably be longer than Storm of Swords, which, other than the massive bloodbath scene, was the most boring and overlong one of the bunch.
I desperately pray his editor bothers to use his pencil.

I'm with Tigercrane, I'm waiting until he finishes the series or dies to read any more.
I might rent the DVDs of the series if it gets good notices.

This is starting to get like Robert Jordan's series....After the 7th or 8th book I got tired of waiting for him to end it and moved on.

I know it. His blog this morning said "A good Snow day." though, which got me excited for a bit, I do love me some Jon Snow...

The good news (maybe): in a recent podcast interview, he was asked if he could write/publish sufficiently to stay ahead of HBO if they turned each one of his books into a season. He said DwD is probably the toughest one to get written, and the ones to follow should be more downhill towards the conclusion, so he expected he could do it. That's setting a deadline of sorts for himself.

RELEASE DATE ANNOUNCED!!!!!!!!!
A real release date. Not an estimate but an actual date that is coming from both the publisher and GRRM himself. July 12, 2011. Less than 6 months away! Click the link to read what George has to say about it and see various iterations of the cover art.

Woo hoo!! I'm usually not this excited about a book, but I was beginning to lose faith! A Feast for Crows was a small step back, so I hope aDwD picks it up a bit.
31biblioholic29
ADWD has my preferred characters, so I'm holding out hope. How bad can a book full of Jon and Dany be?
32elbakerone
HOLY COW!!!
Anyone want to do a reread of the series before July? Game of Thrones in March; Clash of Kings in April; Storm of Swords May; Feast for Crows June?
Dance with Dragons in JULY????
I actually just realized I never read FfC! I've been waiting for a release date for Dragons before I read it knowing that I'd eventually want to reread the series... Wow, now it's like I have two new Martin works to look forward to!

I know I'll be rereading. If we have enough for a group reread, that'd be great. Otherwise, we can just have a few discussion threads open.

I may re-read A Game of Thrones after I finish my current (relatively short) book, just to "warm up" to the TV series. Not sure about the rest yet.
36biblioholic29
It might be done. He posted this on his blog a couple hours ago. (For those who don't know, he's been referring to A Dance with Dragons as Kong the last few months.

I wonder if anyone else feels the same way I do about this. The way I see it, GRRM has been hugely disrespectful to his fans and readers, promising this book for - what now? Six years? Seven? I can't even keep track anymore. But in the meantime, he's been pushing out tons of other stuff (short story compilations, joint-authored novels, etc) that most of us are probably uninterested in. Certainly, no one was waiting with baited breath for Hunter's Run or Sworn Sword in the way that we all have been for years for A Dance with Dragons.
Given this disrespect (if you agree that it's disrespectful), are you still willing to put money in his pockets and support him as an author by rushing out to buy A Dance with Dragons the instant it comes out? Sure, I get wanting to see what comes next in what is a great series, but then, as far as I know, this isn't expected to be the final novel in the series (or is it?)... which means another agonizing wait for the next episode. And honestly, given his disrespect for me (as a fan) in putting this off for so long, I think he rather doesn't deserve the respect I save for my favorite authors of buying their books new, rather than waiting for them to show up at a used book store. I'm also not certain, given how much other great stuff there is in the world to read, that I want to give him any more of my time at all, even if I did enjoy the first four novels greatly.
I know, some of these sentiments are going to make me (even more) unpopular here, but I'm wondering what are peoples' thoughts on this?
(I am also curious about how people feel about the upcoming HBO series. Yes, I want to see it too, and see what they did with it, but we've been expecting the series for a number of years as well, and I wonder how much that had to do with his never producing A Dance with Dragons...)
(Apologies, no touchstones are working)

All I'm going to say is, there's a pretty clear line drawn in the sand at this point and I'm standing on the other side of it. However, given today's news, I hope you'll at least accept this handshake and share a bit of my joy. *extends hand*
I think he's done. Which I think means he'll make that July 12th date. Whew!
If you're like me and don't read quickly enough to review the whole series, you'll be as relieved as I am to discover Wikipedia has excellent summaries on the plot thus far, broken down by character. Best read it before DwD is published and new spoilers get added!

I'm afraid I'm in the 'artists don't owe me shit' camp. As a person who struggles just to write a handful of coherent posts and emails each day I consider every single book from an author I enjoy to be a gift and nothing more.
42StormRaven
I don't get the "he owes me more books" attitude some people have. You bought a book. You got a book. If he never writes another word about A Song of Ice and Fire you got everything you paid for. Shut up and stop whining.
43philosojerk
>42 StormRaven: "Shut up and stop whining."
What a lovely way to engage in discourse. I was trying to probe peoples' feelings about the issue, I didn't ask everyone to agree with me.
>41 clamairy: I can see that. Perhaps they don't owe me anything. I think the GRRM thing irks me more because he kept saying it was coming... and kept saying it was coming... and kept saying it was coming. In the time between the original publication of A Feast for Crows and the expected publication date of A Dance with Dragons, I will have managed to complete an entire Ph.D. - coursework, comps, and the writing of a several-hundred-page dissertation. If I can produce that much in that amount of time, I have to wonder why he can't. And why does he get to be rich and famous for his laziness, when I've been working my ass off, teaching, writing, trying to ake ends meet the entire time? It's a moral judgment, I grant, and maybe an unjustified one. But my intention with the above post wasn't to piss people off. It was to start a dialogue, and see if anyone else held similar feelings.

43: And your response is to start whining about how hard you've worked while he's enjoyed commercial success. Like he owes you something more than you have gotten. It is a silly position to take and it isn't susceptible to "dialogue", because your argument is ridiculous on its face.

Thanks for posting that, biblioholic. It explained a lot, and showed how difficult it can be to write such a sprawling story while maintaining high standards (and going on book tours, etc.)
Personally, I'm in the "he doesn't owe me a damn thing" camp, but I can certainly understand the frustration.
