I did get to Culture House while I was in Rekjavik. Wow!. In the first place it is an extremely well presented exhibit, with a lot of information about the manuscripts, how they were preserved for today, how they were returned to iceland, how they were originally written, the different scripts used in Iceland...

But then there are the manuscripts. Oh my! I have rarely seen even more recent manuscripts that were more clearly written. And when one considers the conditions under which they must have been written, it truely boggles the mind. Of course if they hadn't been that clear, it might havbe been very difficult to read them in torf houses in the long winters with fishoil lamps to read by.

This is a must see exhibit if you go to Iceland. Of course if you are interested in the sagas, there are are lot of other places to visit. For some reason I got the biggest thrill from paddling my feet in Snorri's hot tub. In general most of the museums in Iceland are extremely well exhibited, and most of them have good descriptions in English as well as Icelandic. Culture house also inlucdes Danish.

Many beautiful old Icelandic manuscripts can also be admired digitally (photographed) on-line at http://sagnanet.is/
