Is there a policy about how to handle venues that close? The last location of Cody's Books in Berkeley gave up the ghost a week ago; I noted this in a comment on the venue page, and just now edited the venue description to reflect the closure. But I'm torn between thinking that the venue should be deleted (having nonexistent bookstores show up on the map seems potentially misleading) and wanting to preserve it, both for sentimental reasons and -- well, just because it's information, and LT seems all about not prejudging what information will be useful to whom and how, at least not any more than necessary.

I say they should be deleted, but I do understand the nostalgia thing, especially for a well-loved shop.

I'm for letting it stay, but just indicating very clearly in the description that the place no longer exists. It's interesting for historical value.

Thanks... Well, that about sums up the dilemma! Here's an idea... Tim or Chris: can there be a "closed" checkbox added to venue information so that, if the box is checked, the summary information presented in a balloon when a user clicks on the map pin for that venue will clearly reflect the fact that the venue is closed? (A big red "closed" stamp superimposed diagonally across the venue information balloon would work -- might be overkill, though.)

The children's book in my town has just announced that it's closing, so I'm facing the same dilemma. I also handled it by noting it in the Comments. However, I would actually prefer that closed venues be deleted from Local. I think that's necessary to keep Local a dynamic, usable, and up-to-date feature. Too many closed venues would eventually clutter things up. Numerous times of late I've checked bookstores in an area via the Yellow Pages only to find that they're actually closed. I'd hate to have to sort through the same out-of-date info on LibraryThing. If a venue is closed, the information is no longer useful--the store won't be having events and you can't buy things there. In other words, it's no longer "local." I can see the desire for some nostalgia in keeping a listing around, but frankly it just makes me sad to see a listing for a closed bookstore.

See this thread on the same topic. I brought this up almost immediately when LTL opened.

Do NOT delete closed venues from LibraryThing Local, Tim wants to add a check box so they won't show up in proximity searches, but people can still favorite them and so forth.

Looks like someone nuked Cody's anyway.

Gather up and send me nuked venues. Tehy can, I think, be recovered.

The Free Library of Philadelphia is facing the closing of 11 branch libraries. When the list of branches to be closed surfaced, I added all the branches that were not already up on LT Local, and placed a notice in the description about the closing. Since then, there have been numerous rallies to save particular branches and also all of them.

I would suggest keeping all these libraries, with photos, up on LT, even after they close. Among other things, several of the libraries to be closed were donated by Andrew Carnegie almost or more than a century ago, and are archtecturally interesting.

In addition to the fact that some architecturally interesting venues will remain on LT, what about the sentimental value of book stores we knew and loved as more and more of them close? It's comforting to come to Local and see them posted - even if they are only historical records.

I like the defunct status. Thanks, Tim.

Once thing we can do with the edit option is to perhaps add a postscript later to see what the "former bookstore" has evolved into. Sad, but realistic.

Ouch. That's horrible.
