Did you know how it was going to turn out?

The story of R&J is ubiquitous, and yet when we read it in school, we didn't know the ending, so we got the full impact of it.

I'm really glad it worked out that way, but I don't know if that's typical. By the time you read the play, did you know what was going to happen?

That is a tricky question. I can honestly say that I do not remember (my memory of childhood is foggy at the best of times). Of course, the plot gets given away in the prologue, but especially if you are not yet familiar with Shakespearian language (or you come to the performance a couple minutes late :-) you can certainly miss that.

I do remember a performance, maybe in junior high or something, where I spent part of the performance convinced, for some reason, that they were going to give it a different ending. I have no idea why know, but I remember the feeling, and the disappointment when it did not happen.

I knew how it would end.

What was funny, though, about my first read of R&J is that it was assigned to me in ninth grade, and we read it from a textbook...a textbook that expurgated any even slightly naughty passage. This meant the play was virtually incomprehensible in sections.

My father--a literature professor--went apoplectic when he found out and gave me the real thing to read. I'm eternally grateful for that.

I am actually reading it for school for the first time right now. I was just about to begin Act III. I do know how it ends. The prologue pretty much tells you what is going to happen when it says,

"A pair of star-crossed lovers take their life;"

But I knew how it was going to end before I read that. Reading "Romeo and Juliet" is probably the most enjoyable thing I've ever done for English class. I think I would have rather read another Shakespeare play that I didn't know as much about though.
