I am 1/2 way through getting my GSLIS degree through Simmons College (Boston) (as of Saturday). Weeeeeee!!!!!!!!!!! :-)!!!!!!!!!!
I'm thinking of specializing in YA lit/working with teens.
Are there any other librarians-to-be here??

I am. I'm one semester away from my MLS from Indiana University's program at IUPUI. If you come over to the group Librarians who Library Thing, there's a long thread of fellow students.

I somewhat recently finished my MLS and am working on a dissertation in comp/rhet as part of a double degree program.

I just finished my first year of library school at Simmons College GSLIS West. I have worked with childrens and teens for the past 6 years at the Hartford Public Library in Connecticut. It is a very rewarding job. You must have taken some classes with Linda Braun, she is wonderful. My first class was YA Programs and Services...great class!!!!

I'm about halfway through the Kent program...only taking one online class this summer...

I just completed my first semester in Pratt's program in NYC. Working at their library and interning at the Anthology Film Archives over the summer. Feels strange to be an intern again after all these years...

I just have one month to go before I get my MLIS from Wayne State in Detroit. I'm concentrating in Public Libraries, but I'm hoping for teen services as well. That's where all the fun stuff happens in the library!

One more class to go here at the University of Maryland! ETA for my MLS: August '08!

I am about 1/2 way through (University of Arizona). I love the program. If all goes well I will graduate Spring 2009. I have a M.Ed. in Counseling....yet I realized that I wanted to work with people in a different way. So I hope to someday become an Academic Librarian. I currently work at a community college and hope stay within that system. I think it would be great to network with other future librarians.

I just finished my first semester in San Jose State's SLIS. I am working through my core classes and trying to figure out what to specialize in, school libraries?, archival libraries?, special libraries? Decisions, decisions!

Halfway through my MLIS at University of South Carolina. Whew! This semester is kind of tough, what with working FT and all - but only 2 classes, that's all I can handle. Taking YA lit and Technology in School Library Media (getting my SLMS, as well). Loving it, but it's constant work, that's for sure...

I start my MLIS in the spring at UWM online. I am very excited and would love to hear first-year stories from people.

I've finished my semester at UNC-Chapel Hill and I'm a bit disappointed with the program; too many required classes for a two-year program. I wish they'd leave more room for electives or concentration in a field. I'm going to be a cataloger/archivist!

I'm still currently an undergrad in the ILS program at Southern Connecticut State University, but I'm applying for the grad program in the summer for either Southern or URI for the spring. I'd do it at Simmons but they don't offer full time through their satellite school in Holyoke. I can't travel to Boston nor can I really afford to live there.

Count me in at Simmons (mostly West). Finishing this summer.

Oh, and, ImaginaryFool or whoever else, it is possible to do Simmons GSLIS West in two years if you line your ducks up right and plan ahead. It's possible to take three courses a semester sometimes, and take summer courses. The key is to space out your core courses, instead of taking them all at the beginning.

I started Fall '07 and am finishing this summer. I had to take one Boston class because I originally planned to do it in three years, so only started taking 3/semester and summer courses this year. If I'd taken even one more course last year, I wouldn't have had to go to Boston at all. AND I'm in the archives program.

I'm getting my EDM in May with concentration in language/literacy and children's literature. Yahoo-one down one to go!

noseinbks: I just started this semester at San Jose State as well (ok, you posted that back in 2008 so "hello from the future"). Did you ever decide what to specialize in? I'm working toward reference/instruction in academic libraries.

I just wanted to let the LS grad students at Simmons to know that they are getting a wonderful cataloging professor this fall semester: Kathy Wisser. She was my abstracting and indexing professor this semester and I learned quite a bit from her, with funny examples to help you understand better.

bam125, I went through a year of grad school for my PsyD in Clinical and Forensic Psych. It definitely is still a major interest of mine, but I realized that I don't really fit it or agree with the PsyD and PhD Clinical Psych culture. I had that same realization about wanting to work with people in a different way. It's nice to hear that from someone else with a similar background.

P.S. I also think I eventually want to end up in academic libraries. Though government documents, special libraries and archives are also strong contenders.

hi! im maria from the Philippines and i'm also taking may master's degree in LIS. i started last Nov of 2007 and i hope to graduate on 2011 so that's almost 3 1/2 years. it's our exam week actually and i haven't "really" studied yet for it so i'm kind of not ready. there are so many works to do here in the library. after i graduated i plan to work in an academic library here or try my luck and go work in other country. i hope...

I am currently applying for Graduate Schools and have been conflicted with the choice of continuing my Anthropology track or going the MLS/ILS route. I swear I have looked at CH's website and have never noticed the ILS program listed. My top choices were UNC-G or ECU for MLS/ILS or CH to for Anthropolgy but knowing that they have an ILS program has helped ease some of my conflict.

I'm glad I could be of service! Also, because you said you're interested in the ILS portion of librarianship, we have a contract with the DICE program, http://diceresearch.org/DICE_Site/About.html, that addresses "the major challenges of managing, preserving, and providing access to electronic records" if you're interested in that aspect of ILS.

Also, I know in my earlier posts I expressed dissatisfaction in the LS program. There are quite a bit of required courses and the first one or two semesters can have a lot of introductory classes with the same people. However, after nearly three semesters at SILS I can see the interrelatedness of all the departments. For example, in Cataloging II our teachers talked about when we are cataloging a website, we need to talk to the collection development people on which specific area, if any, they wanted to highlight in the website, what's important to highlight. This also ties into the introduction to archives class I took in that it brings up the problems of managing, preserving, and providing access to the website in question since it can go defunct, be erased, change address, etc.

From hearsay, UNC-CH is good for librarianship in academia, although the program's young adult classes are extremely popular.

I just started my first class at Drexel, as well. Any advice?

I have a much stronger interest in concentrating on archive and cataloging work rather than school or public librarianship so discovery of the ARM concentration at CH has solidified my decsion to apply. Compared to the ECU application I have been working on, the CH app is a monster. I suppose that can be taken as a sign of higher standard and higher quaility of education. ECU offers some coursework which appear similar to those in the ARM concentration, but not an actual concentration. It appears that they try to focus on k-12 librarianship, which could not be farther from my career goals. Working with DICE sounds amazing. It's getting a bit late now, but I will definitely explore the link you posted in further detail later.

For some jobs it might not matter, but ECU is also not ALA-accredited. If you plan to work in a university setting, they're likely to be sticklers for that accreditation. (ECU is NCATE accredited, but since you're not interested in school librarianship, this won't help you much.)

I can ask around the school and see if I can't put you in contact with one the DICE people or even the archives department. I've heard people praise Beth Doyle to the skies. She's an adjunct from Duke teaching the preservation to library and archive materials course. Also, if you want to get in touch with anybody from the archives track or taking the classes in UNC-CH, I can put a call out on the student listserv to see if anybody would be up to talking to you.

I'm in my second year of the LIS program at Wayne State (Detroit). I'm in the online program there, and currently working at a hospital library. I'm focusing on academic libraries and would like to work at a university someday, but I'm open to working at different types of libraries.

#45- The more I talk to people and evaluate my goals, the more I feel like ECU isn't going to be the right place for me. Since my school did not offer any library studies courses, I am having to learn about all of the different accreditations and technicalities on my own. Thank you for the information!

I was actually planning to contact someone at UNC-CH to get some more information about the program, ask some questions, and also so that I can try to form an realistic plan for myself. Any help with anyone that would have valuable information would be greatly appreciated.
Everything feels like such a swamp right now. My undergraduate thesis is the x-wing fighter in my dagobah system mudhole. I guess I just let my nerd side out, but i'm too tired to think of a less nerdy anaology I feel like it will never really be done, but in truth I just need to remember that I have less than a month until the undergraduate nightmare will end.

If you go to http://www.wilis.unc.edu/results.html and scroll down toward the bottom of the page you can find links to profiles for all of the library schools in North Carolina, if you want to stay in the state.

The incoming president of the Society for American Archivists is from UNC-CH, and there is a special archives concentration. That's an area of strength. If you are interested in traditional cataloging, however, you should know that there are no tenured faculty members teaching cataloging. Those instructors are awesome, but who knows if they will stick around?

I'm starting my MLIS program online @ UWM in January - very excited! Also happy to see a group of grad students here...looking forward to the news that goes up on LT.

I started my Grad program in Library and information sciences this past fall 2009. I attend the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee via online distant education. So far its going pretty good. Final week right now so lots of research and papers to write. Any UWM students please feel free to send me a message...or anyone else as well if you want to chat about school, books, library or whatever.

Perhaps we should start a UWM LT group? (maybe there is one already and I just haven't found it yet...)?!

Just started at Drexel. I deferred for a quarter/semester/whatever the term is. Really enjoying it so far.

I just started my MLIS at Valdosta State University in GA. It's mostly online so there are very few face to face classes. I'm very excited. Wish me luck!

2nd class in on MS in Library Information Services at Drexel through onlline only program. Found Library thing as asst my class to introduce us to cataloging issues.

I'm just starting my second year at University of South Florida in Tampa in the LIS program. About half of our courses are online; I miss having all face-to-face teaching.

I'm doing the media specialist track in our program, though since this time last year my dream future-job has shifted from high school media specialist to public librarian, youth services department.
