I knew George Vukelich when I succeeded him as an editor at Electrical Information Publications, Inc., in about 1965. He stayed on as a free lance editor for a time, writing a great column entitled "Notes on a Napkin" for Food Service Magazine. George was quite a character and clashed frequently with the publisher who was a man with no sense of humor, no imagination, and no tolerance for behavior that was off-beat. (He made George shave off his beard.) I remember George being called in one time for submitting an expense account including an item for "Kelly Girl." The publisher thought this was as call-girl service. It was actually a temp secretary agency he'd paid to have some clerical work done. George thought deadlines were for other people, but when his work came in it was always first class -- if sometimes way over the heads of our readers who were owners of restaurants or managers of other food service establishments. Of course, I later enjoyed George as Papa Hambone on the radio during the years I lived in Madison.
