Saturday night update

Books read from: I continue to slowly read Empires of Light: Edison, Tesla, Westinghouse, the Race to Electrify the World by Jill Jonnes. I am determined to finish this book. My main book is Painted Kiss by Elizabeth Hickey. I finished listening to Broken Throne by Victoria Aveyard and started listening to Magpie Murders by Anthony Horowitz.

Books finished in this weekend's Readathon: I finished listening to Broken Throne by Victoria Aveyard.

Book Thoughts: I was riving back to Alabama and so finished listening to Broken Throne. The author has said that this will be the last book to be published in the Red Queen series. I really liked this dystopian fantasy series and think it is one of the better ones I have read in the last ten years. I started listening to Magpie Murders even though I watched the BBC production of the book. I can say that the hardcopy is much different than the TV production. The TV production is recognizable as the plot of the book, but it is still very different than the book itself.
Non-Book activities: I attended a concert this afternoon and then went to an early supper with a friend. The concert was the premier of a choral work that was sung by the Prentice Community Singers here in Tuscaloosa and I enjoyed the music very much. It was an impressive production. Even though I didn't realize that the ticket was $20.00 it was worth it. It was also worth it to see all of the people in the choir that I know. That was fun. In the last month, I have learned that it will not be hard to say goodbye to Tuscaloosa and move on to a retirement home. It will be hard to say goodbye to my wonderful little house here. It is just perfect for one person.
Time reading: 6 hours of listening yesterday
Time posting:
Food: I had a great breakfast with friends and a good days driving yesterday. Today I went to Birmingham and purchased wine for the wine club program on Tuesday. The food and wine clubs I belong to will also be something I will miss when I move permanently, but I hope to replicate those when I get back to Kansas.

Sunday morning update

Books read from: I continue to slowly read Empires of Light: Edison, Tesla, Westinghouse, the Race to Electrify the World by Jill Jonnes. I am determined to finish this book. My main book is Painted Kiss by Elizabeth Hickey - which I hope finish today. I started listening to Magpie Murders by Anthony Horowitz.

Books finished in this weekend's Readathon: I finished listening to Broken Throne by Victoria Aveyard.

Book Thoughts: I am not sure that I like metafiction and that is what Magpie Murders is. In this case I am not fond of reading two mysteries at the same time. Oh well - that is the book, and I am now caught up in the story. The BBC production of this novel is very different, so that is another thing not to like about this novel. I watched the TV show before I read the book. I should know by now that ruins a book for me, but I am so far behind on my reading.

Non-Book activities: Today will be tax day. I intend to get all the paperwork gathered together and then will sit down and do them. It won't take long. It is just a matter of discipline in doing it.
Time reading: 2 hours
Time posting:
Food: I had my customary Sunday morning cappuccino from Starbucks and a very poor very expensive muffin from the bakery in Birmingham for breakfast. If you are going to charge $4.00 for a muffin it had better be good and this one wasn't.

Sunday night update

Books read from: I continue to slowly read Empires of Light: Edison, Tesla, Westinghouse, the Race to Electrify the World by Jill Jonnes. I am determined to finish this book. I put some effort into reading Dark Flood by Deon Meyers but my main book for today was Painted Kiss by Elizabeth Hickey. I didn't quite finish it today, but should tomorrow. I am listening to Magpie Murders by Anthony Horowitz.

Books finished in this weekend's Readathon: I finished listening to Broken Throne by Victoria Aveyard.

Book Thoughts: I am really enjoying Painted Kiss. I am reading it for one of the historical fiction challenges. The March category was notorious women and this book is about Emilie Flogge. She was a muse to Gustav Klimt. She was also an avant-garde fashion designer and business woman in her own right. She was friends with Klimt for 40 years and was a "woman with a certain reputation" in turn-of-the-century Vienna. Klimt painted her portrait and it was rumored that they were lovers. That may or may not have been true. For historical fiction I find that I like this book. It is the authors first book and I will look for more by her.

Non-Book activities: I did not find my tax information so will spend tomorrow reconstructing it. That won't be too much fun, but it has to be done.
Time reading: 2 hours
Time posting:
Food: Indian food for lunch and then consulted my cookbooks for a spring salad recipe to take to the wine club on Tuesday night.

Monday morning update

Books read from: I continue to slowly read Empires of Light: Edison, Tesla, Westinghouse, the Race to Electrify the World by Jill Jonnes. I am determined to finish this book. I put some effort into reading Dark Flood by Deon Meyers. I finished reading Painted Kiss late last night and early this morning. I am listening to Magpie Murders by Anthony Horowitz.

Books finished in this weekend's Readathon: I finished reading Painted Kiss by Elizabeth Hickey and finished listening to Broken Throne by Victoria Aveyard.

Book Thoughts: I enjoyed Painted Kiss. It was the author's debut novel and it was good. The word I would use to describe it was atmospheric. It set the tone and the temper for turn-of-the-century Vienna giving the reader a real sense of the time and place that was. Historically it had some inaccuraties, but it is historical fiction, so it doesn't have to be 100% truthful. It did justice to all of the characters who were alive then and part o the story of Emilie and Gustav. I read it for one of the historical fiction challenges. The March category was notorious women and this book is about Emilie Floge. She was a muse to Gustav Klimt. She was also an avant-garde fashion designer and business woman in her own right. She was friends with Klimt for 40 years and was a "woman with a certain reputation" in turn-of-the-century Vienna because she was Klimt's model and muse for so long. Klimt painted her portrait and it was rumored that they were lovers. That may or may not have been true. It was also rumored that she and Klimt were the models for "The Kiss" which was one of Klimt's last great works. That is one of histories unknowns.

Non-Book activities: I will be working today so won't get that much reading done. I also have yoga and grocery shopping to do. Then supper with friends.
Time reading: 2 hours
Time posting:
Food: 2 fruit muffins and some great coffee for breakfast. I hope to make it to Panera for coffee later this afternoon as well.
