Why does that cover look familiar...?

Not sure where else to share this, but I thought a couple people might get a chuckle out of it! I used to be really big into scanning all my book covers to use on LT. Mostly because there just weren't high-res versions accurate to my editions available online. (Just looking in my computer folders right now, I've got roughly 2000 or so scans between books and comics.) At one point, I even ran a website where I shared all my scans in an image gallery. So it wasn't that odd when I would see one of my cover scans regularly pop up in a Google search.

Having said that... I just bought the ebook for an old Star Trek novel I own. And when I was uploading the cover to LT, I thought it sure looked familiar. So I pulled up my paperback entry (that uses my cover scan, which I also verified by pulling up my original scan on my computer) and sure enough, it looks like Pocket Books just used a brightened version of my scan for their official ebook edition! It's especially obvious because of the visible crease on the right edge and the identical wear on the embossed title. :D :D

My paperback cover scan:

>1 saltmanz: Funny. It has me thinking we should all leave a particular flaw on our cover scans so we can see where they end up.

We could make a scan and add something, a character from another book, or a little motif, or some text. One could add a quote from yourself about the book. This could be fun.

Wow!

I'll bet that if you sent this story to Victoria Strauss at SFWA, she'd love to hear it. She and Ann Crispin ran the Writer Beware watchdog blog for years together, until Ann's untimely passing (Victoria still runs it solo.)

>1 saltmanz: I'm sort of surprised they didn't fix the crease! It would be a relatively easy thing to do.

That's hilarious. The brightening made the wear on the K even more noticeable.

Just goes to show that when you put information out there someone is going to take it. Who would have thought an official publishing group would do that? I say go for royalties if only to slap their fingers so they do not do it again. Sue
