Count of Monte Cristo DLE

Hello, I am looking to purchase this DLE but before doing so would like to know some stuff about it from people who own it or have owned it. How clear is the text and what is the quality like for the illustrations? I have seen some say that the text looks faded and that EP often poorly reproduces illustrations. Would just like to know before purchasing as it is quite expensive on the second hand market. Thanks

EP has published several editions of the Count ranging from one volume to five, so be sure you know what you are getting. I don’t own any of them, but the DLE is a reproduction of a 5-volume 1887 edition. Easton’s success with reproductions is spotty — some are near perfect and some pretty pathetic. Someone on this forum must have a copy and should be able to advise you further.

I should also warn you that virtually all early English translations of French novels from the late 1800s, including Dumas, Verne, and Hugo, were substantially abridged and in some cases altered in order to meet “Victorian standards” of taste. If you want an “honest” translation, get a newer one that says it is unabridged.

>1 Diomed: hi. This is the only ep set I owe and can tell you, if you can afford current secondary market prices, definitely go for it. Excellent set, clear font and illustrations are almost on every page. This is coming from someone who does not like easton press books. I have to give it to them their due credit for count of Monte cristo 5 volume set. Excellent font and feels luxurious in my hands. Thick paper and looks beautiful in burgundy leather. Some pictures of my set, I took font pictures as well. Oversized books and heavy, if you like that. I also have Routledge 1887 count of Monte cristo and 1886 routledge Les miserables with a lot of illustrations that I purchased from used book store here in Geneva for $100 in US money, years ago. now sets like that worth a lot of money.

>1 Diomed: In my opinion the Easton Press reproduction of the Victorian publications (1886-1887, 1894) of Dumas and Hugo are unequaled for quality and beauty. To date Easton press has impeccably published 5 of the profusely illustrated Routledge editions and they are all worth getting:
1. Dumas - Count of Monte Cristo - 5 volumes
2. Hugo - Les Miserables - 5 volumes
3. Hugo - Toilers of the Sea - 2 volumes
4. Hugo- Hunchback of Notre Dame - 2 volumes
5. Dumas - Three Musketeers - 2 volumes (1894)

Other volumes in the famous 1886-1887 21 volume set are as follows. They are available in the used book market, usually in drab olive green binding with tan title label. Some are rebinding them in leather to go with their Easton Press editions since EP does not plan to publish the remaining volumes in this set :
