Book about moody man, tree huggers and California rains

I need help finding a book I read many years ago in college (pre-2006.) All I remember is it was a contemporary American fiction, about moody man, tree huggers and set against a backdrop of a very rainy California. Might have been about climate change and nature destruction. It’s definitely not a new book and is considered modern contemporary American fiction that might be recommended to be read in college. I think it was written by a man. I remember it evoked pessimism in me but I don’t remember the plot or name or author of the book. Would appreciate your help.
