Nearly everything I do on LT now creates a new tab in Safari on my iPad. Before long, I have dozens of tabs open. On Microsoft Edge, also on my iPad, I get an error message saying pop-ups are blocked. I can’t find a setting to prevent new tabs and open in the current tab.

Sorry for the trouble: do you mind giving a few examples of pages and buttons/links you're tapping on that are opening up new tabs for you in LibraryThing itself? I think you may need to go into your iPad's Settings > Safari settings to investigate this further, but want to be sure. Also, what model of iPad do you have and what OS (software version) are you running?

I just now had this happen. Start at Home. Select Your Books: opens in a new tab. Key-in a search term: opens in a new tab. Modify the search term: opens in a new tab.
My device is an iPad Air 2. My software version is 15.4.1. I have automatic updates, so I don’t really know when I received the latest. I will check the settings for Safari, but I haven’t changed them in eons, nor for Microsoft Edge. This behavior is relatively new for LT, but I usually figure someone else will report it! I would say it’s been at least two weeks, maybe more.
Thanks for helping me!

I also find that I can no longer delete a book, not from the X on the Your Books pages nor from the individual Edit Book page. I turned off the Block Pop-ups option in Settings > Safari, but it didn’t help.

My iPad Pro running 15.5, stays in one tab, running the above steps.

Somehow, I got Delete working again!
However, I’m still getting new tabs for many operations. I am not double-tapping nor holding down the link to get a new tab. I’ve changed multiple settings in Settings and checked after each and no luck. I did recently install AdGuard. Could that be it?

>6 dkhiggin: Any plugins can change how a site works. Try to disable anything that does not come natively with the browser - then start enabling one by one. AdGuard and all similar plugins change how sites look and behave so it may well be causing what you are seeing.

>6 dkhiggin: Ah, in that case >7 AnnieMod: is right. I would try what they're recommending. Let us know what you find!

I have turned off Content Blockers, plus my iPad updated to 15.5, and the behavior continues. :-( i don’t see a way to turn off AdGuard other than uninstalling it. I guess I’ll try that. Otherwise, I give up.

I had my Zoom level set to 85% (for all sites) and when I set it back to 100%, it works as expected — no multiple tabs! Strange.

>12 dkhiggin: Argh, sorry for the continued trouble. To be clear, this is *only* happening on LibraryThing.com? Do you use other sites in a similar way on your iPad, and does the same behavior happen?

Certainly we are not purposefully doing anything to cause this. Very few of our URLs open in a new tab (I know we might have one or two somewhere on the site but I can't recall any right now, that's how few). So there must be some disconnect between your browser setup and loading the site. Whether that's a plugin, content-blocker, a Safari setting, or something else, it's hard to know.

I think it must be a browser thing, but I can’t find a setting anywhere that would cause it. It only happens on LibraryThing and it happens on my iPad Mini, too, and I’ve never installed AdGuard on it, so I don’t think it is that. I don’t have any other add-ins. I’m having to use Microsoft Edge more and more!

I am now seeing the same "multiple tabs" behavior on Microsoft Edge as well as Google Chrome, so it isn’t just Safari. In addition, I can’t delete a book.

Okay this is an idea out of the blue that occurs to me - there is an accessibility option called 'sticky keys'. When this is active each time you single press certain keys it acts like you are constantly holding the key down (hence the name 'sticky keys' because it acts like the key is stuck down). If you have this accidentally switched on, I think it could do what you're describing, constantly open every link as a new tab, if it thinks you are holding a certain key constantly down.
Dr Google suggests to find this setting you'd want to go to:
Settings > Accessibility > Keyboards then tap Sticky Keys to off.
I'm not an iOS or mobile device user so apologies if I got some of the terminology wrong! And also sorry if this is a complete red herring suggestion!

>16 dkhiggin: Sorry for the trouble! Would you mind posting a new bug report for the issue of not being able to delete a book, with specifics for the steps you're taking to do this and where you're getting stuck (along with any errors you're seeing)? Thanks for your patience.

I believe I have figured out the issue at last! It solved both my multiple tabs problem and my occasional inability to delete. I never remember how to display a photo here, so I’ll have to describe it.
A release or two ago, Safari (on my iPad) added several options when opening a link if the user held their finger down rather than just the usual quick tap to select. A list of options then appears as follows:
Open
Open in Tab Group
Open in Split View
Download Linked File
Add to Reading List
Copy
Share…
Some of those options may have been available for ages. I’ve just never used them. At any rate, I tried the Open in Tab Group option, and voila! it opened in the same tab and so did every subsequent selection. Seems to work that way with the plain Open option as well. In addition, I’m able to delete duplicates with no problem. It would seem the Open in New Tab is the default.
BTW, I appreciate all the suggestions and, believe me, I tried every single one!
