Welcome to my 2nd thread of 2022

Long story short……LT 75er for 13 years and still trying to reach 75 books a year! I thank the powers that be to allow me to stick around this awesome group. The mantra has been “It’s not about the numbers….” but I’m still going to try and have fun doing it!
I normally read in Northeast Ohio but have been known to read wherever and whenever I roam.
Mom to my son,Will, 23 who just graduated with his Master's Degree in Slavic Studies and I'm the mom of 2 furry kids Lev, my problem child and his sister, Melia (Lia) a sweetheart, both 2 yo.
After 30 years of municipal government employment, I retired. When not reading I do what retired folks do, volunteer at my church, crochet and cross stitch, work in my yard, take walks, travel and visit wineries though breweries and distilleries work just fine too. This is much longer than I wanted….so much for minimalism.

No long lists, just keeping it simple

Currently reading The Lost Apothecary for library book group.

Hi all, hope the U.S citizens among you are enjoying your three day weekend doing what you enjoy most. I've got some computer work to do first, then I'm transplanting hostas from one area of front yard to another, finish working in the kitchen and hopefully some relaxing time on the deck.

>6 msf59: Thanks, Mark! I am indeed.

>7 figsfromthistle: Thanks, Figs!

Here is a remodel update: The flooring is to be delivered either Tuesday or Wednesday with demolition of the kitchen set to begin on Thursday
Most everything has been removed from the current cabinets but I intend to clear out everything remaining today.

#18 Kitchen Confidential
Anthony Bourdain

I loved this book. Bourdain seemed to give an honest and entertaining account of his career in the culinary arts. I would recommend this book to anyone whether you're entertaining the thought of entering the restaurant business or not.

Exciting it is, Amber! A bit stressful too, but I know it's worth all the inconvenience. My laundry room is now my makeshift kitchen, I've got little pathways on the second floor as most of my first floor belongs need to be kept someplace. They didn't bring a huge dumpster like I had assumed so the ratty ole family room furniture needs to be addressed. I need to remove the carpeting on the stairs to the second floor, I need to tame the jungle that used to be a yard. Breath, Lynda, just breath.

>19 Familyhistorian: Thanks for the encouraging remarks, Meg! I'm glad your reno went well. I know mine will too. I really enjoy working with this local company. Very hands on and keeping me informed every step of the way. hehehe as long as I have a microwave, sink and coffee maker I'm all set. My frig has been moved to the dining room so that area is my temporary kitchen and the laundry room has a sink. Fun times!

-----
I had two cumbersome sofas in my family room, I couldn't even give them away because my kitties mistook them for a scratching post. As I was working outside I saw 1 then 2 sofas sitting on my deck. When I went inside to see what's up, the demo guys said they'll put them in the garage for me and they'll take them to the curb for me when my trash collector picks them up. What a relief! Trash collector told me to wrap in plastic and they could take one at a time. Soooo. One is gone and I'm about to schedule pick up of the second after posting this.

22Carmenere
Jun 14, 2022, 8:43 am

More news: I finished two books
#19 The Lincoln Highway
Amor Towles
3.5/5
Don't hate me for this rating. It was a very nice, nostalgic read and if I had not read Towles' A Gentleman in Moscow I probably would have rated this one a 4 or higher.
The thing is, I had a very difficult time becoming invested in this story. The beginning dragged and I had to put the book aside for awhile. I only picked it back up and finished it in order to return it to my friend.
Perhaps, it's the curse of having a hugely successful novel that the next is hard to beat.

#20 The Lost Apothecary
Sarah Penner
3/5
I read this one for my monthly library group and I have to say I probably enjoyed it a bit more than others. A split timeline was sort of off putting with many who enjoyed the 18th century timeline more interesting that the 21st century's.
I felt the different timelines presented a nice juxtaposition of two different eras where woman had different ways of dealing with similar situations.
This is the author's first novel and there was some speculation in my group if there could be a sequel in the wings.

23Carmenere
Jun 14, 2022, 8:46 am

>21 msf59: Howdy Mark! Yes, it's the cast of Peaky Blinders that has me coming back for more. I do think it sortofkindof jumped the shark and it's probably a good time to end the series but I'm still thoroughly liking it. (enjoying is hard to say because of all the bloodshed)

I'm currently reading a much overdue read and review for NetGalley, Big Lies in a Small Town. Another story with dual timelines but so far so good.

Also, I just landed Ian McEwan's new novel Lessons thru NetGalley. I've got to read that one quickly as there is a time limit. He's one of my favorite authors so it's 400+ pages won't be a detriment for me.

#21 Big Lies in a Small Town
Diane Chamberlain
NetGalley
3.75/5

I requested this book from NetGalley because I thoroughly enjoyed Chamberlain's earlier novel, Necessary Lies. This one did not disappoint. Although different in subject matter, this novel also addressed some forms of prejudice in the United States in the early 19th century. More directly however, this novel is the story of a young artist, Anna Dale, who, in 1940, beat out more experienced, local artists to win the opportunity to paint a mural for the town's post office depicting the history of Edenton, North Carolina.
When, in 2018, the painting, hidden for many years, is to be restored, Morgan Christopher finds there is more to this mural than just the history of Edenton.
Well constructed novel with nicely drawn characters and, like paint to a canvas, totally absorbing.
Thanks to NetGalley, the author and publisher for allowing me to read this advanced copy. I regret I did not read it on a more timely basis but I intend to spread the word that this novel should not be missed.

You could use any tool (your computer probably has Paint or the equivalent basic editor), and I would try cropping out most of the table and chair so we see that fine color in more of the shot. It looks great.

#22 Old Success
Martha Grimes
NetGalley
3 1/2 out of 5
Well, it is unfortunate that I let 24 novels in the Richard Jury Mystery Series slip by me until NetGalley allowed me to read an Advanced Cope and introduced me to #25, Old Success. My fault I did not read it on a timely basis.
As a newbie to this series, I found the different locales and large cast vexing as well as intriguing. I will enjoy going back to book #1 to learn more about characters that customarily show up in this series and learn more of their relationships and interconnections.
Although NetGalley doesn't allow 1/2's this book is a solid 3 1/2 for me.
Thank you NetGalley, the publisher and author for allowing me to read the advanced copy and I apologize for the delay in my review.

The reno ran into a little snag. The ceiling artist (he's the guy that knows how to put swirls on the ceiling, a style prevalent in the 70's) arrived Monday but found problems with my ceiling. So, after we talked to the project mgr it was decided we'd do away with the old ceiling and lay a flat one down but that entailed scraping off the old swirls and filling in what remained with plaster. Then , because of humidity in the air, the plaster wasn't drying fast enough. So we've got fans working to dry and a humidifier to such out the water in the air and hopefully they can finish with the ceiling tomorrow. Then next week, some flooring will go down and the cabinets will be brought in.

#23 When Breath becomes Air
Paul Kalanithi
5/5
Take it or Leave it Challenge #1

I tend to always give memoirs a high rating because the author is totally putting him or her story out there for people to decimate however even if I didn't I still would have given this book 5 stars.
With the exception of the Foreword by Abraham Verghese and the Epilogue, written by Dr. Kalanithi's wife, Lucy, everything is taken from Paul Kalanithi's personal journal.
When we are first introduced to Dr. Kalanithi, he has just learned of his medical diagnosis and for that reason this book could have been titled "When Doctor Becomes Patient. However, this memoir is much more than that as he regresses to stories from his childhood, how everyone in his family seemed to be a doctor but he never imagined he would follow in their footsteps. Yet, a doctor he did become, a neurologist at that.
What struck me is the way the author relates stories of how doctor's are affected by their patients medical triumphs and, sadly, their struggles which are sometimes difficult to bear. It is this humanity that endears Dr Kalanithi to the reader especially when he and his wife attempt to manage their lives after his diagnosis.
A very fast and interesting read.

#24 The Vanishing Half
Brit Bennett
Library book group
3.5/5

I've been wanting to read this book for awhile, so when my book club chose it, I was very pleased.
It was a well told story, multigenerational and familial.
At its most basic premise it concerns race and passing for something you are not. There are several different characters who know who they are but don't wish to share it, even with their daughters. This can cause a multitude of problems.
One does not have to look too deeply to find that race is not the only issue at hand.
As for a book club read, this book was phenomenal! I highly recommend it for that reason. Discussion was one of the best we've had in our group.

Hi Kim! I guess I tend to get lost in the crowd of posts. Glad you found me. I'm getting so antsy, I just want my house back but I think I have at least another 2 weeks. They're finishing the flooring in the dining room today and the living room tomorrow. That's great news in that I can finally move that furniture back where it belongs. A little sense of normalcy.
I think I was a bit stingy with my stars for The Vanishing Half. It was a well told story and should have been a bit more generous.

#25 The Bell Jar
Sylvia Plath
1963
4.5/5 stars
TIOLI Challenge #5

We first meet Esther Greenwood in NYC. She's travelled there from her home in the suburbs of Boston as a fashion magazine prize winner to experience eight weeks at the all female hotel known as The Amazon and work as an intern in the fashion industry. Parties, freebies showered upon the girls in the forms of makeup and clothes, a sense of freedom and new acquaintances don't really seem to excite Esther.
Mainly, she seems obsessed with the future and the life she's expected to live. Marry, have children, be a housewife it's not for Esther. But, how can she experience life and still to accept the norm?
This novel, I feel, is a written testament of the general lives of women in the late 1950's, early 1960's and the options opened to them. It appears some find their way through the cracks and to know their stories would be extremely interesting but for Esther, it's not so easy.
A great book for discussion.

>73 Carmenere: I just finished The Bell Jar Lynda and found it an excellent read although it is difficult to read this book and separate it from the author's own life. I felt totally immersed in Esther's life and in her depression. I was surprised at how much humor there was to be found as well.

#26 Lessons
Ian McEwan
NetGalley
3.5/5

This novel is an expansive story covering the lives of many people over a timespan covering a multitude of decades. There is no denying the exquisite prose of McEwan and his ability to weave characters and situations into a solid book.
The reader meets the main character, Poet, Roland Baines, as he's waking from a dream like state. Memories of his dominatrix-like piano teacher when he was 11 years old gets the story off the ground. We will go back to those days but first he is reminded his wife has abandoned him and their baby son. Oh, and then there is a news report of a nuclear accident and the cloud is moving in their direction.
As he prepares for the inevitable poisonous gas to consume them he reminisces about his parents, his childhood, his wife and in a Forrest Gumpish sort of way, the many historical markers that left an impression on his life.
Although I count McEwan as one of my favorite authors I'm beginning to believe that for me, his shorter novels work best and, to this day, many have left a lasting impression. The wordiness of Lessons taught me a thing or two and that may be the point of Lessons. Life itself is a lesson.

Hi Lynda - I hope you're coming to the end of your renovations. And, you've managed to do some reading. I read The Bell Jar years ago and think it would benefit from a reread. Lessons sounds good; I'll look for that one. McEwan has been hit or miss with me, but this one sounds good.

Everyday is a little closer to getting back to normal. Living room loveseat and chair were delivered this morning along with new oven/range, microwave and dishwasher. Those will be hooked up next week.

In the meantime, Will and I stopped at a sidewalk sale in Chagrin Falls and then a rummage sale at a local church. I brought home a mini haul of books, of course: The Guest List, Little Fires Everywhere, Orphan Train, Anxious for Nothing and Atomic Habits.

In other news, Will and I are going to be hometown tourist's in Cleveland this weekend. Saturday, we're finally going to The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame prior to seeing Elton John at Progressive Field. This will be the third time I've seen Elton in concert and since this is final tour, and I've been a fan since 1970, it's a must see.

So much fun having Will home for a bit before he heads back to Columbus next week.

The highlight of our weekend was due in part to this guy. Amazing performance. Will and I had a blast.
We enjoyed our weekend in downtown Cleveland. R&R Hall of Fame, dinner with friends before concert then we all walked over to Progessive Field. Will and I booked a room for the night cause....well...I'm old and apparently don't have the energy 75 year old Elton has.

So on one of our very rare trips to the big city, we took in a few more sights....

I loved the image of you and Will at the concert!!! But, mainly, I appreciate the relationship you have with your son. My grand daughter Kayla lives with me since last December. My two daughters decided in preparation for January/February surgeries, she should be with me to help.

She is such a delight, and doing things together is a great joy! The image of you and Will reflects the happiness you share when being together!

>87 PaulCranswick: Hi Paul, I've been a fan of Elton's since the early 70's. There was absolutely no way I was going to miss his final concert in Cleveland. He's got a tremendous amount of energy for his age and I'm pretty sure he's not one to rest on his laurels in retirement. I like that he promotes new artists and keeps pace with what's new.

I was fortunate to receive Lessons through NetGalley. I believe it's official release will be in September and I'm not sure of the Booker guidelines for releases. It is a large tome and worthy of a look.

Will and I have such an incredibly good relationship. We're both under the fiery sign of Aries but have never had an altercation. We enjoy each others company and that means the world to me.
I'm so so happy that your Kayla is there for you. It's that little spark that reminds you, you need to get better because you are loved. I can see many similarities between you and Kayla and Will and I.

Gretchen Berg
Library book club
2/5

With all do respect to the author, this book was clearly not my cup of tea.
I had a difficult time cozying up to any of the characters from this historical fiction of small town America in the 1950’s. Many of them ignorant, judgmental bigots and maybe that was the norm in the 50’s but I’d like to have seen a more varied group.
Some episodes were beyond the pale to even be considered plausible.
All is exposed at the conclusion which may offer some satisfaction to those who have stuck with the story lines.

I always give memoirs a 5 out of 5, afterall it is their story and for better or worse they've put their hearts on the line.
I also tend to add my two cents cause my opinion matters a wee bit. Ms Ruhl, by trade is a playwright, so writing comes naturally to her and she simply took one experience and expanded it to make a book. Those who may have suffered from Bell's Palsy after childbirth could find this book interesting.

I reread this one for my library book discussion group. I found this classic to be a bit more risqué than my first read of it several years ago.
A good discussion was had about the children and the ghosts and their influence on their young lives. Just what did they do to these children?!
Briefly discussed the governess and her imagination but we agreed the ghosts were real.
The author’s excessive use of punctuation aside, it’s a pretty good ghost story.

I’m not one for family sagas but this is so well written, I can not not like it.
With their father deceased and abandoned by their mother Maeve and her brother David seem to hold on to the family home as the keeper of their memories. The fact they’ve been kicked out of that home by their stepmother makes their obsession with it understandable.

This mystery, secretly investigated by Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth, could be somewhat plausible. She seemed to be as smart and alert as they come and indeed, accustomed to palace intrigue - so yeah, why not have her solve the murder of an overnight guest at Windsor Castle.
A fun read but sadly, although published in 2021, some of the factual characters have since departed this world or their positions ie - Queen Elizabeth, The Duke Edinburgh, Shinzo Abe and still here but since departed from his position, PM David Cameron.

I always wanted my name to be spelled with Lynda instead of Linda!!! I graduated from a small -town high school noting it was the largest to date in 1970 -- 105 people of which six were Lindas.

I send all good wishes for a wonderful Thanksgiving!

Ah yes, nothing says late 1950’s early 1960’s like Linda! I feel people can guess my age as soon as they hear my name. I do like the Y though truth be told I’d rather be a Lyndsey and only a very few call me Lynn, which I do like.
On occasion, I’ve been known to put the “duh” in Lynda

>162 PaulCranswick: Well Paul, under the circumstances, I’ve gained double the household chores. Not quite the lady of leisure I once was but I feel I’m gaining some control.

I am thinking of you as the holidays are near. I've been working on getting things in order, cleaning closets, taking items out of shelves and wiping them down and re-arranging. I am learning my limits, and when I feel the pain of overdoing it, I stop right away.

I have always had difficulty sticking to one task without flitting to another room and starting something there. I am on a mission to downsize where and when I can. I'm fortunate because there is an American Services store very near the development where I live. Kayla helps load up what I am giving away and we both take it away.

There is way too much stuff in the basement and the garage, plus all the books in every room.. My little neighborhood friend Andres loves the basement. He actually asks if he can "go shopping in the basement." He makes me laugh. He marches down there, goes through things and happily carries something in his arms as he takes it home. I never asked his parents how they feel about helping to empty my house while filling theirs. Most recently, he brought up three rain deer, for outside Christmas decorating. His little arms carried one at a time , and now he and his father will put them in the front of their house.

His father was helping me turn off the water for the outside spigots so the pipes don't freeze. We were in the basement, and he found an electrical contraption that can be used for outside multiple lights. He said he was just about to go to Home Depot to buy that gadget. I gave it to him and he happily walked upstairs with his shopping treat. It made me laugh as I reminded him that he too is going shopping in the basement.

Kayla and I and her friend Eliott will put up the Christmas tree next week. It is so good to have people with a lot of energy who help me. I remember the year Will joined Sam's Club and bought a pencil thin tree. I tried to keep the tradition of a live tree, but alas he was very proud of himself with this Charlie Brown sad looking thing. When my daughter walked in the house and looked at his latest idea of a tree, she immediately went out, purchased a larger tree and mumbled as she decorated it. I heard "What was he thinking?" "What in God's earth was he thinking?"

Everything was perfect till my airline cancelled my flight just as we were about to board. Ugh. After standing in 3 lines I received a refund for the flight. While in line I quickly booked another flight on a different airline for the next day. Thank you Spirit - Boo to you Frontier.
Besides bringing home souvenirs I brought home a very sore throat, cough and aches and pains. Covid test was negative so probably a touch of flu

I read a good chunk of Project Hail Mary and fell asleep listening to The Christmas Train which I'll have to quickly scan again to see what I missed. But I did have a dream about traveling, divorce and barbershops so I'm curious if the story contained any of those situations.

I have got to tell you, this bug laid me low. It's been over a week and I'm just now beginning to feel somewhat human. I only finished #39 because I borrowed the audio and I could just close my eyes and listen. Actual reading of anything was extremely difficult.

#39 The Christmas Train
Library group book discussion.
I'm going to give this one 3.5 stars simply for two reasons, the feel good vibes and my love a good train story! The skeptical side of me categorizes romance novels and sci-fi in the same category. Romance novels are often too unrealistic to be believed. In other words, you will never find me watching the Hallmark Channel. That said, by coincidence, two former lovers are reunited on a train bound to LA for the holidays. It's on again off again, romantic comedy that doesn't quite allow me to care as much for this couple as I have for romantic comedies of Hepburn and Tracy or Bogart and Bacall. You get the picture.
Coincidence just doesn't happen and in the case of this book you'll know why.
It is an ok read or listen. Cozy in its confinement.

Turns out this bug is Covid. Sigh! 1st time after 2 years of this pandemic. I tested positive last week and again yesterday. My dr says, stop testing as I could test positive for months! What?! I think the worse is over - just a lingering cough and fatique. I'm going to venture out of the house today (I'm no longer contagious) but masked.

#40 Messy Roots A Graphic Memoir of a Wuhanese American
Laura Gau
2022
4/5
I enjoyed this coming of age graphic novel. The voice of Laura is authentic and sincere as she tries to identify with her new life in the United States and navigate school as an Asian student in a very non-Asian environment. It's about finding your people, the people you most relate to despite nationality and affiliations.

Lynda. I am thinking of you as you and I try as best as possible to move forward, sometimes through the fog, then, there are those events when there is pure sunshine. I have a lot of framed photos throughout the house, many are of Will and Kayla when she was a little girl. He loved her so very much.

I close my eyes and can hear her say "Opa, you are one funny guy!" I'm not sure why, but this year is more difficult than the previous Christmas holiday without him. Bethlehem, is a town nearby, and also where Lehigh University is located. I spent 36 years of my life working with students.

Will and I spent a lot of time in Bethlehem each Christmas. We attended a Bach Choir event. Also, there is a small chapel tucked away behind the many historic buildings in downtown Bethlehem. We attended Christmas concerts in that space, that felt quietly holy.

I binge watched the latest season of The Crown. What a close-knit, nasty bunch of royals!!!

I understand that your heart is full now that Will is home. He adds so much to your life. I am glad that you have him to help celebrate time with 14 people!!!

Hi Linda! Thank goodness for beautiful and timeless memories. They certainly sustain us. Last week I watched Edward Scissorhands. It was the first movie Bill and I saw together. We were enchanted by it then and it still affects me today.

I found the Romanov episode very interesting and a great break from the married couples and their soap operas.
