Still trying to escape reality by reading Georges Simenon novels. I've finished Maigret's Holiday this week.

Today I'm going to start reading Fluke: Or, I Know Why the Winged Whale Sings by Christopher Moore. I'm going to see the author on the 20th with some friends. This will be my 2nd time seeing him. He was very funny last time!

I'm about 40 pages into The Sellout by Paul Beatty. Wonderful, dense, funny, acute writing. I can see why it won the Man Booker Prize a couple of years back.

I finished Prodigal Son: Dancing of Balanchine in a World of Pain and Magic which was a fascinating account of Villella, Balanchine, and ballet, particularly the intricacies of method and artistry.

Send For Me – Lauren Fox
Book on CD read by Natasha Soudek
3***

This is an historical fiction work set both in 1930s Germany and in contemporary Wisconsin, that tells the one family’s story. Annelise is the daughter of a loving couple who own a bakery in Feldenheim, Germany. They are Jewish but not particularly religious or observant, so when they begin to hear of the anti-Jewish sentiment, they are not very worried. But as Hitler’s power increases, things escalate. Annelise, her husband and infant daughter are able to leave for America, but her parents are left behind. Decades later, Clare, discovers a packet of letters her grandmother had saved, and begins to piece together the story of her family.

I liked how Fox tells the story in the mundane details of life. Young people chafe at restrictions imposed by adults, enjoy some school subjects and hate others, form friendships and find love. Adults shop for groceries, talk to their neighbors, go for walks in the park, try on a pair of shoes. Mothers meet to exchange information about child-rearing. And all the while devastation is looming just over the horizon.

There were parts of the novel I really liked, when I was completely engaged and caught up in the story. But there were other parts that just fell flat for me. I think this is my fault; I am just so over the dual timeline in historical fiction.

Lauren Fox based this work of fiction on her own family’s history. She discovered her great-grandmother’s letters in boxes her grandparents had stored.

Natasha Soudek does a reasonable job of voicing the audiobook. But it did take me a while to get used to her delivery. I didn’t feel the characters come to life, and this affected my rating.

Couldn't be bothered to finish The Echo Wife by Sarah Gailey.

Finished Disappearing Acts, but just by the skin of my teeth. Enjoyed watching the romance develop, but when McMillan started deconstructing the relationship, I got really impatient with the male lead's self-centered immaturity.

Next up is an LTER, Dark Age Monarch, which is an Arthurian novel.

I read Purple Hibiscus this week. It was beautiful writing, but it contained the worst child abuse I've encountered in fiction, and it made me feel ill. made me feel ill. Still, a magnificent piece of work.

I'm now on the first few pages of Unwanted by Kristina Ohlsson - a Swedish crime novel, and still listening to Shantaram.

I'm still mid-way through The Once and Future Witches and also halfway through The Scholar, the Sphinx, and the Shades of Nyx. I'll probably finish the latter more quickly than the former. It's YA, which is not my cup of tea if I didn't read it when I was younger, and also a quicker read.

Finished the dark, disturbing, yet beautifully written, Young Mungo.

Wizard of Oz: An Over-the-Rainbow Celebration of the World's Favorite Movie
Ben Nussbaum
4/5 stars
This is a short book celebrating the movie - The Wizard of Oz. The author discusses a myriad of topics on the film, the actors who performed and even talks about the Broadway musical - Wicked. Definitely for fans of the movie.

Just finished Dark Age Monarch, an LTER. Full review is up over here: https://www.librarything.com/topic/341680#n7833760

Next up is another Sandra Dallas novel, The Chili Queen.

The cast comes off my arm Wednesday, so my reading volume will probably tank, as I have a looooong list of chores that I've been postponing until I have two functioning hands again!

Not a Penny More, Not a Penny Less
Jeffrey Archer
3/5 stars
Four men are swindled in an investment by Harvey Metcalfe, a wealthy man who has no remorse. The men get together to take him down and get their money back. Not my favorite of the Archer books but I enjoyed it.

Finished The Chili Queen, and it may now be my favorite Sandra Dallas novel. The observant reader will see some of the twists coming, but probably nt all of them. This was just a romp.

Picking up Louise Erdrich's The Last Report on the Miracles at Little No Horse next.
