Another favorite photo - this time it is Rae and myself on Christmas Eve of 1999.
I'm Mamie. I have BIG love for books and movies, cooking, making lists, wine, snark, and shenanigans. I try to get into trouble as often as possible, and I am very good at it, so I often succeed.
I live in the Deep South of the US - Georgia. I'm an Indiana transplant, so after nine years I am still adjusting to the

1. Hench by Natalie Zina Walschots - recommended by Richard (4 stars)
Richard's review of this one made me snap it up in a Kindle deal, and I was not disappointed. Very fun, and I loved a morally gray character as the protagonist. There has been a lot of talk about this one lately, so I will leave it at that.
2. Fun Home by Alison Bechdel (4 stars)
This is a GN, which I read now because it fits the AAC theme. It's a memoir of the author's life growing up with a disinterested mom and a dad who was hostile and abusive but who also shared her love of reading. The dad also has a secret that will change how she views him. I thought she did an excellent job of sharing how conflicted her emotions are when examining her dad's life and its impact on her. She loves him but he was not a nice person. I liked that the book doesn't really draw conclusions, just kind of puts it out there for consumption. I was glad that I had recently read Proust - Swann's Way comes up as does Ulysses and Collette. I loved the way that what she was reading shaped her thoughts. Anyway, if you do GNs, this one is highly recommended.
This should do it - next one's yours!

Happy new thread, Mamie. I hope Abby is back to having good days. Catching up with your last thread I liked the look of your new furniture and the dark floor reminded me of the hardwood on the main floor in my townhouse. I had to shovel snow again today but you really wouldn't want this stuff. It was heavy west coast snow, full of water with a crust of ice on top from the freezing rain that fell.

Mamie, do you have a bedroom on the main floor so that Abby doesn't have to use the stairs so often? Sometimes changing things up is the only way to go, when dealing with health issues. *Accommodation*, at least until she heals and gets stronger.

Hi Mamie! Happy new thread. My goodness. 56 new messages across 2 threads since I posted less than 24 hours ago.
From your last thread – we’re in a special arrangement with Spectrum. They had to run all the special cabling/boxes to our remote neighborhood and trench to each house. It is a special agreement with a 10-year contract, 50 households only. We're not unique, just unique for this area. First year was $60/month, next 9 years are $97/month for both hs wifi and cable. Before that it was effing Centurylink. If you’re in a suburban setting I’m sure you won’t have anything like it, just normal wifi and cable. We can leave Spectrum, but it would increase the payment for other households and we’d then have nothing, so not an option.

>36 jessibud2: We just have the master bedroom on the main floor, Shelley. Craig is always willing to sleep upstairs and let Abby sleep with me, and we have done that before. I had a talk with her last night about having someone follow her up the stairs in the evenings just in case, so we are going to start doing this. She is an adult woman (25), so I really try to let her make her own decisions, and we have talked about the stairs before. She loves her room upstairs and does not want to move down. Usually if she is having a bad day, she just stays up there.
>37 karenmarie: Hello, Karen. Thank you.
That makes total sense about the arrangement.
The topper love is happy making for me.
Yep. I feel like that is all we can ever ask for. Happiness is where you find it.

Last night, Rae and I watched another episode of Cold Case. Mostly yesterday was about laundry and some other household chores. Today we have Griffin, and we will be doing our usual Mexican takeaway, which I am very excited about. Craig is supposed to be getting tires on his car at 3pm today, so cross your fingers for me.
On the reading front, I listened to several chapters of Kim yesterday while getting house stuff done, so now I am ready for chapter 9. I also read some in The Year of Lear and Kidnapped.

44scaifea
>43 Crazymamie: I think you've already said, so forgive me for forgetting and asking again: do you have a favorite/usual?
45Crazymamie
From Mexican? I almost always get the chicken chimichanga meal.
46scaifea
>45 Crazymamie: Oooh, excellent! I'm a chimichanga gal myself! I also like loaded nachos.
47Crazymamie
>46 scaifea: Me, too, with the nachos, but we have gotten excellent with making our own, so now I prefer mine. Heh.
48scaifea
>47 Crazymamie: I've 'made' nachos before, but just by dumping shredded cheese onto chips and then microwaving them. It scratches the itch, but just barely. I need proper melted cheese sauce, and I just can't be arsed to do that myself unless it's taco night, but for some reason I don't do that very often and then, of course, I'm...eating tacos...
49Crazymamie
I hear you. If you ever want a full tray of really good nachos, here's what you do:
Lay out your chips on a baking sheet. Add your desired toppings. I am kind of a nut about this because I like for every chip to have the topping on. Add as much shredded cheese as you want. Bake in a 400 degree oven for 5-6 minutes. We serve with sour cream and quest on the side. They come out perfect every time, and it's an excellent way to use up leftovers.
*quest on the side! This computer keeps changing my words, and it is really getting annoying. Queso.

Hi Mamie, and happy Saturday to you.
Yay for the tires finally happening. Mobile Mamie rides again.
Sigh. Store-bought salsa is ridiculously high in sodium, which I can't do much of now (and for the rest of my life? don't know yet). I am measuring it out when I use it and adding it to the daily total, but I'll get the energy soon to try to figure out how to make my own that tastes like the brand I like (Herdez medium salsa casera).

I make salsa using canned tomatoes - do they sell canned tomatoes without salt? Or low salt? I use the IowaGirlEats recipe:
INGREDIENTS
makes 4 cups
28oz can whole peeled tomatoes, undrained
1/2 red onion, roughly chopped
1 handful cilantro leaves, roughly chopped
2 cloves garlic
1 jalapeno, seeded and roughly chopped (leave in seeds for a spicier salsa)
1 teaspoon salt
juice of 1/2 - 1 whole lime
1 teaspoon sugar*

Happy that you're MotorMamie again, that Abby's fall wasn't severe, and that you're well-provided with Mexican.
Well, that last one's a total lie, I'm vibrating with jealous loathing that you can get Mexican that doesn't taste like a frozen dinner that thawed on the counter instead of being nuked.

How are you liking The Year of Lear?
72EBT1002
>62 Crazymamie: Since my stroke (six years ago!) I have been pretty good about watching my sodium intake. They do indeed make canned tomatoes with no salt added and it can be a significant difference. We also look for lower sodium beans, etc., when shopping for canned goods. Sometimes the organic beans or tomatoes are lower in sodium than the "low sodium" options. I think beans, tomatoes, and green chilies are the main things we buy in canned form; most other things we buy fresh or frozen. That also helps with sodium intake.

Yesterday Craig and Birdy worked on some electrical stuff under the house - remember those wires that something chewed through? Craig and Daniel had fixed a lot of it, but some stuff still needed to be done - I know nothing about wiring. Anyway, we were without power for part of the day since I told Craig he was not allowed to electrocute Birdy. He was pleased with the work they got done, so hooray for that. I think now our water softener can go back onto the circuit it is supposed to be on or something like that. Today, I need to do laundry and a few other things, but I am also hoping for a bit of the lazy this afternoon. Also, there is football.
On the reading front, I finished up Kim on audio yesterday - a slower novel that I thought it was going to be but still worth the read. I also read about half of The Kiss Murder - this is a murder mystery series by a Turkish author that someone mentioned over on the Asian Reading Challenge thread. The protagonist is "a male computer technician by day and a transvestite hostess of Istanbul's most notorious nightclub by night" - so far it's very fun.
Last night I was putting some stuff on the calendar, and I realized that my count was slightly off for my 30 days of no alcohol and caffeine - yesterday was day 30!!! Amazing. It went by really fast, and I am happy to report that with that and my intermittent fasting I lost 12 pounds. Go me! I am seriously considering doing another 30 days of no alcohol. Caffeine, welcome home!

>62 Crazymamie: >72 EBT1002: You’ve made me look at the tins in my cupboard as here I don’t think it’s the norm to add salt at all to basic tinned ingredients. None of the tinned tomatoes, sweetcorn or several varieties of tinned pulses had any added salt: I buy the supermarket own brand rather than anything particularly special. Tuna did have added salt (although not in excessive amounts) and also baked beans, which I would expect as they are in a sauce. We tend to add very little (if any) salt to our cooking.
79Crazymamie
>78 SandDune: That is so interesting, Rhain. I love salt, but my husband has high blood pressure and high cholesterol. I think a lot of American items have added salt and sugar that is completely unnecessary.

Thank you for the kind words - I am thrilled. I am eating between 8am and 4pm - I like a milky warm beverage in the morning, so I like to start earlier as opposed to later. Being done by 4pm means I have a nice amount of time where I am still up and active and can finish getting my water in - I drink 2L every day.
That's kind of how I am feeling about our Falcons, but will probably watch today anyway. Evidently I am a glutton for punishment.

>82 karenmarie: Morning, Karen! Happy Sunday.
I need to get out my IP and use it more - I am slightly intimidated by it if I am honest.
Craig is always feeling lucky when it comes to his survival, so I have to remind him that taking risks with the children's health is off limits. He is a bit of a nutter. He once fell out of a tree with a running chainsaw. So, yeah...
I am enjoying The Kiss Murder and would not have found it if someone hadn't mentioned it over on the Asian Reading Challenge thread - I think the thread from 2021. I need to look up who that was. Anyway, I was shocked that our library system had it.
Rae's backup team is also the Chiefs, so she was very happy with the win yesterday.

>77 Crazymamie: Congratulations on your12 pound loss Mamie, great news, I know how hard it is. I've started eating vegan 3 consecutive days a week (maybe more, but if I do three I'll be happy). 4 pounds off in week 1.
85karenmarie
I was intimidated with the stove-top pressure cooker I had and never used it except to seal pickles... the IP makes me feel safe using a pressure cooker. And if you make hard-boiled eggs, it makes them quickly, beautifully, and they peel like a dream.
86Crazymamie
>84 Caroline_McElwee: Thank you, Caroline! And hooray for your 4 pounds off! We are transitioning to 5 days a week of vegetarian. This week I did six days of vegetarian, which I am very pleased about. In addition to losing weight, I am feeling so much better.
87Crazymamie
>85 karenmarie: I have a thingy just for making boiled or poached eggs which I love, so I still use that. It's this:
I just need to get my IP out and use it regularly - I'm intimidated because I am still unfamiliar with it. I also have a fancy rice cooker that I would like to do more things with. Hopefully, this will be my year of learning new things in the kitchen. *smile*

Mamie, could you share some of what you ate for your 6 days of vegetarian? I'm trying to do more meatless days, but I lack imagination in what to make other than pasta and a lot of beans :-P
89Crazymamie
Katie, I have been pretty much flying by the seat of my pants since I have not had access to a car, but here's what I ate:
*grilled cheese with apple slices
*salad - with spinach, boiled egg, tomato, black olives, celery, shredded carrot, goat cheese
*salad with spinach and arugula, roasted corn, black beans, boiled egg, feta cheese, tomato
*one of each of the above salads in a wrap - I heat the tortilla then add smaller portion of salad and roll up, paired with apple slices or some other fresh fruit
*naked pasta - I like to cook it and then just drizzle with a bit of olive oil, salt and pepper, with green beans and fresh fruit
*everything bagel with cream cheese and a fried egg

Back to add that today we are having some kind of plant based burger with black beans and broccoli. Craig bought the burgers, so if they are good, I will ask him what kind they were.

I absolutely adored the IP. If only it hadn't tripped the breakers....
I'm glad you're down by double digits! Now, if I could *find* those pounds I'd be even more delighted. *sigh* Nothing's ever perfect for long.
The Kiss Murder was Big Gay News in the 80s. Never really caught on for some reason.

I was chuckling as I have a spousal unit who 'does it all' and when he goes out with his chain saw or axe or whatever I usually remind him to please not cut his leg off. (Remark greeted with disdain, always.) This xmas he took our daughter's bf out to saw (no chain saw thank goodness) branches off a huge tree what fell right straight down a favourite pathway in our woods so I asked him not to let the bf cut his leg off.

>101 banjo123: Interesting, Rhonda. Thanks for getting back to me. Now I feel like I need to make it happen because I dearly love meatloaf. Meatless meatloaf is cracking me up a bit, though.

Congrats on the healthy start to 2022, Mamie. Thanks for reminding me of the Beyond Meat burgers. We had them a few times in the summer (something about summer and burgers just feels right), and then they fell off my radar.

Morning, Mamie! We had Jackson for over seven hours yesterday. Sue was in heaven. She also got the lion's (or lioness) share of cuddling, which I had no problem with, as long as I got some time in. I am glad the Bears season is over. That was painful. We hope they can correct these many issues and show some improvement when they suit up later in the year. I hope your teams won.

So, I have been to the market and the library. It's wonderful to have car again. And the weather here, while not anything resembling winter, is full of gorgeous. We're supposed to go to 63F today, but it's still 57F with a breeze and sunshine, so perfect for porching. We have the French doors to the screened-in porch open, and the fresh air is lovely. The market had almost everything I wanted - no cream cheese of any kind in sight. Weird.
On the reading front, yesterday I read from Mindful Drinking and Snow- why, in a story where you are going to repeatedly mention the city of Kars would you name the main character Ka? Mind boggling. And why do we need to keep mentioning the name of the city - no one is going anywhere, so it seems pointless to mention it more than once. Small irritations. It's moving very slowly so far, and the main character is annoying me. There is also a lot about religion in it. Anyway...I need to start a new audio, and I am thinking of The Great Game: On Secret Service in High Asia - I thought this would be a perfect follow-up to Kim, so unless something else calls to me, that will be my next audiobook.
Yesterday, we pretty much just watched football, so nothing to report on the streaming front.

The cream cheese shortage has been big news up here. I believe it started before Christmas. Nothing like endangered schmears and cheesecakes to incite panic in the greater NYC area :)
115bell7
>113 Crazymamie: We had/have a cream cheese shortage too (I bought a two-pack before Christmas, one for me and one for my SIL because she hadn't been able to find any). Apparently there was a cyberattack?
Sorry Snow isn't great for you. I remember liking it when I read it a few years back, enough to recommend but probably not reread.
Will you/your family be watching much of the playoffs, or not so much if your team is eliminated? (I'll probably have some on, but more as background noise than anything else, and switch to the Australian Open when it starts.)

Yep, cream cheese and cream have been hit and miss here in SW Washington lately too. Last time I was at the store both were plentiful, however so I could have cream cheese stuffed celery with my hand sandwiches this week and Hubby has his chive/onion cream cheese on toast and cream for his coffee. It reminds me of living in Ireland inn the early '70's when you never knew what would be available (or not) when you went to the grocery store. The only thing that was always there was potatoes.
118Crazymamie
>114 katiekrug: Oh, dear! I had forgotten you live in bagel country. Well, I had no idea, Katie. Of course, I have not been to the market since before Christmas, so...
>115 bell7: Interesting, Mary. I am very much a mood reader, so part of it might be that I am not in the mood for this kind of book right now. It does irritate, though, that love seems such a shallow thing, and the main character feels shallow, too. So much about physical beauty and not much about inner beauty.
I always watch. I love football, so while it is more exciting if I have a team in it, I watch regardless. And I so love me some tennis, too, so I'll also watch what I can of the Australian Open.
>116 alcottacre: Thank you, Stasia. And now I'm on Day 33 - I have decide to go for another 30 days of no alcohol.

Last night, Abby and I watched the first two episodes of Dickinson - it's very good. I love the modern music with the historical story. Reminds me of what they did with A Knight's Tale. And how they worked her poetry into the storyline is full of fabulous.
On the reading front, I read some more in Snow and tried out The Great Game on audio - not sure it will work for me in this format. I want maps and it feels like too much information for audio, so I am going to choose something else. Maybe something fun like The Wind on the Willows or The Secret Garden, which was one of my favorite reads from childhood.

It's a thing ... Kars is the city, kar is the word for snow, Ka is the character. It's like Russian nesting dolls.
Edited to say: I don't know if it works in English, or really how differently it reads in Turkish except there's going to be a whole lot more repetition of those syllables when you take into consideration how often he mentions snow. It reminds me of a novel kind of like that in Italian (that I haven't read yet), Pereira Maintains, which plays on the repetition of the word for "maintains" (sostiene) and how many different meanings it can have. In translation, these word games don't give the same (or any) meaning.

I have begun too many books. Snow is one that I'm neglecting, and probably it will get sidelined. I tiptoed through the Asia Book Challenge thread and noted that Snow doesn't have many passionate fans. That drained any real enthusiasm I harbored for reading it.

So I am using today as a prep day for kitchen stuff. I have just finished making some roasted veggies - these are so easy and so tasty and can be used in many different things. Abby learned to make these when she was working at that coffee shop that also sold soups, sammies, and salads. I love that you can make a big batch of these ahead and just use them out of the fridge. Here's the recipe for anyone interested:
You can use whatever veggies you want -today we used two big red peppers and one red onion.
Cut the peppers and onion into thin slices - I like to cut them again lengthwise, so they are shorter. Add enough vegetable oil to be able to coat them, so about 1T, and then mix them up. Add the seasonings and brown sugar and mix to coat. Spread onto a foil lined (shiny side up) baking sheet, season with a bit of salt, and bake at 325F for 14 minutes. Let cool, and then put in airtight container in fridge. We use them in wraps, sammies, omelets, and homemade pizzas.
Here are the spices:
Black pepper
Garlic powder
Italian seasoning
Parsley - yes, it's in the Italian seasoning, but you want just a bit more
Brown sugar
For 2 peppers and 1 onion, we used about 1/2 tsp of each seasoning and about 1/2T of brown sugar. You add the salt after spreading the veggies on the foil because if you add it with the rest of the seasonings, it tends to clump.

>140 katiekrug:, >141 BLBera:, >142 richardderus: Yep - Richard's got the right of it. I should have taken an after photo to go with the before one. We are planning on using these in choose your own omelette's dinner. I also made sautéed mushrooms.
The potato soup is on the stove, and we are just waiting for the potatoes to cook. I fried up some bacon and crumbled it for those who want it to garnish their soup with. We also have some shredded sharp cheddar cheese. I should have gotten some crusty bread to go with (the Publix makes an excellent garlic loaf that would fit the bill), but I totally forgot that. Oh, well.
My other project for today was making meat for nachos/tacos - I meant to buy a pound of Beyond Beef for this, but in my marketing excitement, I picked up the wrong package, so we had Impossible Meat instead. I fried this up and used my regular taco seasoning, and it came out great. It picked up the spices really well and cooked just the same as meat except for not giving off any grease. I am Most Pleased.
Got this from the freezer section, and just put it in the fridge overnight to thaw.
I originally planned to also make up a batch of granola today, but my back is killing me, so that will have to wait until tomorrow.
While I was prepping/cooking, I started listening to The Secret Garden, narrated by Indira Varma. I read this book for the first time back when I was in fourth or fifth grade, and I absolutely loved it. The narrator for this one is a perfect fit, and I am finding the story just as charming this time around as I did all those years ago.

Infused oil
blanch 2 bunches of thyme or basil
and cool in cold or ice water.
Drain the herbs and lay out on paper towels, roll and wrap in plastic. Leave herbs overnight in refrigerator.
Put herbs and 1Q of olive oil (not extra virgin) in a large bowl, one with a spout works best. Cover and leave at room temperature for 3 days.
Filter oil through paper towel or coffee filter.

Yes, on the Impossible "meat"! Rob and I experimented with it and found it very tasty indeed. Though we're both so umami-oriented that old-fashioned corn oil was pressed into service for the missing and missed grease.
148Crazymamie
>146 quondame: Thanks for that, Susan! An excellent idea!
>147 richardderus: I am surprised by how much I have liked both it and the Beyond Meat. And it's easy to work with. Interesting about the corn oil - I am filing that way for future use if needed. I might have fried mine up in the same pan that I had fried the bacon in earlier (after the grease had been removed, but without washing the pan). Don't judge me, people, I'm trying to eat less meat, not be a strict vegetarian.

I ike the idea of using faux meat for things like nachos, chili, anything well seasoned. I'm a bit more hesitant where it needs to stand more on its own, like a burger, but your recent experience makes me feel better. I'm off to the supermarket tomorrow!

Morning, Mamie! Since I have been working on losing some weight, (so far succeeding) those roasted vegetables look great. We have been sautéing up a batch of spinach, mushrooms and onions each week, to add to all kinds of meals. I won't be skinny for Costa Rica but I will be much more comfortable.

I am not pro mandates but I really don't see a good argument for not getting the jab. For me it is a question of personal safety. Empirical studies show that we are safer with the jab than without it/ Easy peasy.
It doesn't provide immunisation but the manufacturers never claimed they did (only the politicians did) but gives you a better than even chance and means that symptoms are highly unlikely to be severe. I am pleased to say that all my household Me, Belle and Erni have been at least double jabbed - Erni and I boosted. Hani & Kyran (who currently has omicron covid) & Yasmyne are all double jabbed.
I thought that medical practitioners were supposed to set a good example.
Anyway enough of the fools. My little girl is 18 tomorrow (15/1/22) and her daddy is wondering where the time went.
Hope all is well at the Paradisio despite all and everything. x

Hi Mamie, I’m so far behind...I forget which posts I’m commenting on... I use that same IowaGirlEats salsa recipe, it’s really good. And a grilled cheese (havarti if I have it) with apple slices is one of my favorite lunches/easy dinners. Oh, and with some Trader Joe’s Mango Ginger Chutney. Yum!

Hi there Mamie, and happy weekend!
I've become a huge fan of roasted veggies - particularly cauliflower, broccoli, brussels sprouts, parsnips, turnip, etc. Yum! We're a bit less enthused about meat substitutes. We liked it (impossible burger) when we tried it this summer in a taco salad, but it had a weird mouthfeel when the meal was over, and nutritionally we weren't overwhelmed by how it compared to the real thing. Still, we are trying to reduce meat consumption and experimenting with different grains (current favorite is farro).

Hi Mamie! I will be thinking of you this week as you remember the special man you had as a dad.
My brother will be here with me this year on what would have been our dad's 86th birthday. I'd like to do something special in his memory, but I'm not sure what yet. I have an HOA board meeting that evening. My dad was almost always the secretary of the boards he served on, and I remember him writing a lot of minutes. Taking minutes at a board meeting will certainly remind me of him!
My brother will be here with me this year on what would have been our dad's 86th birthday. I'd like to do something special in his memory, but I'm not sure what yet. Morning, Mamie! I hope you had a nice, bookish weekend at the Pecan Paradiso. My Sunday was filled with books, football and more Jackson time. Yep, happy times.

Hi Mamie, I hope everything is good where you are, well aside that is, from the concerning vaccination numbers and the fact that most of the people in Craig's office haven't braved the jab.

Ah yes, peachy!

Mamie...how can I pepper you with book-bullets if you decline to enter the line of fire? Don't you realize that the solid cornerstone of my very identity requires that you find my recommendations from my reviews so utterly irresistible that you beggar yourself and deny your children an inheritance as you amass a biblio-Smaug-hoard?
Hmmm?
Now, fair's fair. Step into the shooting gallery. Quick sticks, possum!

Hello, Everyone! Sorry to have been absent from my own thread - it has been a week full of crazy, and it was most happy making to finally arrive at Friday yesterday. We have been enjoying some cooler temps, but because the weather system does not want to get cold and stay cold, the changing pressure systems cause migraines for me. So the week started off with wind advisories and eyeball piercing headaches. The rest of the week was filled with appointments and insurance stuff - Abby turns 26 in February, and we are trying to see if we can't keep her on our health insurance for another year since she cannot work or drive currently. It's a process, so please cross your fingers for us.
Yesterday was my Dad's birthday - he would have been 96. Rae and I have been watching Columbo through from the start in honor of him - we have these on DVD. My Dad loved Columbo. And Kojak - remember him? "Who loves ya, baby?" Anyway, when I think of my Dad, my heart goes first to Action Adventure Theater, which we used to watch together every Sunday - back to back movies with no commercials and some kind of theme connecting the movies they chose. But we also watched loads of crime shows together - Barney Miller, Baretta, Starsky and Hutch, Barnaby Jones...
On the reading front, I have finished up four books since last reporting in - The Secret Garden (a childhood favorite), The Murder Kiss, Good Talk and Small Things Like These. Still working on Snow (which I am not loving), Tender at the Bone, The Year of Lear, Kidnapped, Why Orwell Matters and Mindful Drinking. I have also started Moon of the Crusted Snow. On audio, I am listening to One Good Turn, which is the second book in the Jackson Brodie series - this is a reread for me.

Morning, Mamie! Happy Saturday. Glad to see the update. We have missed you. Enjoy those cooler temps and fingers crossed for Abby. I also just finished Small Things Like These and it was wonderful.

Glad to see an update from you, Mamie! Fingers crossed for Abby and the insurance. Sorry about the migraines but I'm glad you still managed to finish some books :)
ETA: Good memories of your Dad. *hugs* I made snickerdoodles yesterday and thought of my mom a lot, as they were her favorite cookies.

>221 Crazymamie: So happy to see you back but less so that you have been suffering such headaches.
Abby will definitely be in our thoughts here in the tropics and I hope and trust that things work out for her as you all wish and more importantly that her conditions will relent and allow her to fulfil her enormous potential in whatever she wants to do.
One thing I always remember about you, Mamie, and your threads is the wonderful memorials you have made for your dear father. Reflects not only on what kind of man he must have been but also on the quality of the daughter he produced.
Have a lovely, and pain free weekend at the Pecan Paradisio.

>199 Copperskye: Hello, Joanne! That salsa recipe is one of our favorite things. And grilled cheese with Havarti! Yum. Sadly, we do not have a Trader Joe's close to us, but now I know what to request the next time Daniel and Kaitlyn make a road trip there - Trader Joe’s Mango Ginger Chutney. Thanks for that!
Thank you for those good wishes for Abby - she has good days and bad days. Her latest doctor visit was productive, I thought, and we are going to start looking into places/doctors that specialize in CRPS.
We are loving Dickinson and Shetland. And I want to check out the newest Ann Cleeves book to tv series - The Long Call, but I want to read the books first.
>200 Whisper1: Thank you, Linda!
>201 PaulCranswick: Hoping Belle's birthday was full of fabulous, Paul. Being the baby has its own blessing and burdens, but I remember feeling slightly lost when I was the last one left at home.

Hi Mamie!
Sorry about the migraines and appointments and insurance stuff. Fingers crossed for Abby and keeping her on your insurance. We have some friends whose son is on the spectrum, and she’s been able to keep him on her insurance. I don’t know what kind of hoops she had to go through to keep him there.
I know how much you miss your dad. I’m glad you have been watching some of his favorite shows.
Four books. My, my.

Oh, dear about the emotional tempest! Hoping things are better now. I need to come catch up with you - I am very behind on the threads currently. So true that parenting never ends.
Yeah, the vaccination thing is a mess. So stupid - Craig's office had a skeleton crew all week because of it, and we experienced the same thing at the eye doctor. The local hospital is also short staffed because of Covid.
>203 karenmarie: Hello, Karen! I am sad that football is winding down, but the season was kind of painful, so it's probably a good thing. Hoping next year will be better.
>204 AMQS: Hello, Anne! Sorry about the weird mouthfeel with the meat substitutes - I have not had that. I was expecting to have texture issues, but so far I have not had a problem with it. It has been much easier to cut down on meat consumption than I thought it would be, which has been a lovely surprise. We are wanting to try more grains, too, so I will have to report back on our progress in that area.

>222 msf59: Morning, Mark! I have missed typing that! Happy Saturdayness to you. Thanks for missing me - what a wonderful welcome back I got with all those thoughtful messages. Thanks for the crossed fingers - most appreciated.
Small Things Like These was indeed full of wonder. I read it in one sitting yesterday.

The migraines were at the beginning of the week, and all I got done was listening to The Secret Garden, which was full of fabulous. The hugs mean a lot to me. Thank you, my friend. Rae and I have been having fun with our rewatch through Columbo, and it's fun to see them in order. I love your snickerdoodle memory - Mexican wedding ring cookies always make me think of my mom as she made really good ones, and they were my favorites growing up. Sadly, I do not have her recipe.

>233 lauralkeet: Hello, Laura! Thank you for those kind words. We transitioned thought the healthcare stuff just fine with Rae and Daniel, but they both had jobs that offered benefits, so it was much easier. I remember being really worried about Rae because she has Aspergers Syndrome, and the meds that she is on are very expensive without insurance. She also doesn't drive. It was a blessing when an opening came up at Craig's offices and she got hired in. Craig sat out the hiring process, so she did it all on her own, and it has been a good fit for her. And perfect timing because she was 25 at the time.

Sorry to hear about the migraines Mamie. I had them til my 40s, then they pretty much stopped except the odd one, so can empathise.
I loved Columbo and Kojak and Starsky and Hutch, and Hill Street Blues. I called one of my cats Belka, ironically, as he was sleek and shiny. It is lovely to have something to do that puts you in mind of lost love ones. We eat cake on my dad's anniversaries. He loved cake, but always said he didn't have a sweet tooth!
Crossing everything re the insurance.

>236 Crazymamie: Employer-sponsored healthcare is just so stupid isn't it, Mamie? As a retiree from a large company, I feel very very fortunate to have healthcare benefits through the company even though their level of subsidy is decreasing. Both of my daughters have been through the "find healthcare on your own" process and it's just so darn complicated. Kate's recent job change came with healthcare. Julia's company offers a stipend but she had to find an affordable plan on her own. She's looking for a new job right now, and that's not the only reason but it's a factor.

Abby's pain management doctor is who is treating her full time, but their office does not fill out any disability forms - even just the ones for insurance. So we have to go back to her primary care physician, who is not treating her CRPS. She is tremendously helpful and kind, but she has to request all the paperwork from the pain management clinic and from the neurologist office because even though Abby requested everything to be forwarded to her primary care physician, none of it has been.

I can totally commiserate with the migraines. Mine have been getting more frequent in these last months. Have you ever tried those eye masks that you keep in the fridge? Not solid from the freezer but soft gel masks that are just cold. I find they really help. Problem is they get warm from your body temp more quickly than I'd like but if you haven't tried them, it may be worth it. I got them at the pharmacy.

We've got health insurance here, and while the system is very confusing for actually making appointments, etc., the doctor I saw was very nice and listened (unlike the doctors I had in the last 10 years in the US). Also, I get 10 appointments a year that are totally free, after that I have to pay some sort of copay. Anyway, the point is that it seems pretty sensible overall so far.
But that's at a private hospital. I've only gone to a public one for my Covid shots, and that was also an easy experience. One weird thing I've heard is that if you are staying in a hospital, they don't feed you? You have to order or have someone bring you food.

>252 ursula: We have been lucky in that we could just not go back to the doctors that were not listening to Abby - the three she has now are really good. I was very impressed with her primary care doctor who I had not met before - she was excellent with listening and asked thoughtful and insightful questions and did not make Abby feel rushed at all. Your health care sounds reasonable - are those ten appointments with the same doctor or any ten appointments within the system? That is weird about the food at the hospital - I wonder how people with no one/no money manage. Of course, all the hospital food I have ever had has been terrible, so there is that.
