A new work has been commissioned for the Christmas Eve service every year since 1983; a tradition begun by Stephen Cleobury. Telemann: Orpheus.

Penny Gore introduces Telemann's opera Orpheus conducted by René Jacobs, who rediscovered the piece 25 years ago - and has come back to this sparkling work, this time with the B'Rock Orchestra from Ghent, and a fine cast of soloists. Told in an unfamiliar way, it's the ancient Greek myth but as seen from Orasia, the widow of the King of Thrace, who murders Eurydice out of jealousy. We'll hear the opera divided in two parts, spread around the afternoon. Also today, Prokofiev's Symphony 1 'Classical', with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, and John Foulds' Sicilian Aubade, with the BBC Concert Orchestra. Including: Telemann: Orpheus - Part 1.
