February - Time travel - SilverWolf28 - https://www.librarything.com/topic/338804
March - Historical SFF - christina_reads - https://www.librarything.com/topic/339607
April - Lifespans - antqueen - https://www.librarything.com/topic/340500
May - Invasion - majkia
June - Next book in a series (not #1) - Kristelh
July - Family (biological or found) - markon
August - SFF by Asian authors - Kristelh
September - antqueen - Quests and Journeys
October - Robots and Sentient AI - Tanya-dogearedcopy
November - Award winners - h-mb
December - majkia

The wiki is here: https://wiki.librarything.com/index.php/2022_SFFKIT

2021's main thread is here if you'd like to take a look for reference or inspiration.

Suggestions:
- Mama Cat - meaning read a book that will work for one of the 2022 Cats and the SFFkit
- Mental abilities, like telepathy or telekinesis or dreams that affect the real world

Some old favorites:
- Female authors

I'm not sure I can host a month, but can I suggest Lifespans for a topic?

It would cover either future humans or an alien/fantasy race with a lifespan very different from what we consider usual. So, they live for centuries or millennia or are even immortal. Alternatively, they could have a lifespan of days, months or a year.

Nov 10, 2021, 10:16 pm

>2 Robertgreaves: I like that one. Though it makes me realize that I've read a lot of books with beings with longer lifespans than humans have, but not so many with shorter ones.

Nov 10, 2021, 11:10 pm

>3 antqueen: I have a vague idea that I have read a story where an alien race had a very short lifespan but I can't remember the title or author.

OTOH I did see this on FB recently (warning, you might want to have your hankie out):

I'll take May, topic not decided yet.

eta: how about invasion as a topic.

I'll take June, topic undecided.

8SilverWolf28
Nov 11, 2021, 2:44 pm

I'll take February.

9antqueen
Nov 11, 2021, 5:59 pm

Great! I've added you both. I put myself in for April too, though if anyone else wants it I don't have any strong preference for a month.

I'll volunteer to do July - not sure what the theme will be yet.

11JayneCM
Nov 13, 2021, 3:50 am

I'll take January if you like. I was thinking 'a villain or morally grey main character' as the topic.

12h-mb
Nov 13, 2021, 8:06 am

I'll take November.
Still thinking about the topic.

13antqueen
Nov 13, 2021, 10:18 am

Updated, thanks for hosting!

I'm still thinking about a topic too. I like the lifespans idea in >2 Robertgreaves:, or maybe something with mental abilities, like telepathy or telekinesis or dreams that affect the real world. I liked the journeys category from 2021 too. And we did near future/alternate reality this year. Far future/distant past might be interesting. Hmm.

Editado: Nov 13, 2021, 10:46 am

So many SFF are works of series and maybe we did them every year but seems like it is something that works every year. May I host complete a book(s) in one of your series, cannot be book 1.?

15Kristelh
Nov 13, 2021, 11:04 am

Another one that I've thought might be different for us is to read a SFFkit that it's mama Cat, meaning read a book that will work for one of the 2022 Cats and the SFFkit. A twofer.

I think I'll take the award winners as theme for november. Thanks for the idea !

I'm trying to decide between a theme of family in a work (found or biological) and weather/climate theme. I know finding weather/climate stories is pretty easy these days, so I'm leaning toward works with a family theme.

Nov 14, 2021, 10:25 pm

>17 h-mb: I've put you in for award winners.

>18 markon: I'd never really thought about the "found family" idea as such until I saw it in a reading challenge, but since then I've noticed I read more than I'd have thought. Apparently a favorite of mine :)

I'd like to volunteer for a historical SFF theme in March. It would include steampunk, gaslamp fantasy, and really anything that is set in a recognizable past time.

21antqueen
Nov 17, 2021, 1:12 pm

Great! I'll add you in. Still need a few hosts, but we're getting there.

Checking my notes as to when the next MurderBot book is coming out... Fall 2022...

I'd like to take October! Robots and Sentient AI

ETA: The new book being released next Fall is called, 'Witch King' and is NOT a Murderbot book!
I would still like to take Robots & AI though... I'm sure there will be something if not another MB story!

Thanks! I'm behind on MurderBot myself... need to catch up, but I guess I have until next fall :)

Other ideas I was kicking around before I settled on Robots & AI were: Stand Alone Fantasies, Fantasies under 300 pages, graphic novels, science fiction from the Age of Sputnik... If any of those appeal, feel free to take! :-)

ETA: OK, no—‘Slaughterhouse-Five’ is time travel but it’s not SFF. I know I must have SFF + Time Travel in my stacks… Time to do a tag mash search!
