I just saw this on DVD last night and was pleased. I read "The Bear Came Over the Mountain" in Hateship, Friendship, Courtship, Loveship, Marriage a few years ago and found it one of the more compelling stories in the collection. It's the kind of story that could have been made into sappy Hollywood drivel, but this ended up as an excellent film.

The acting was spot-on. The director (who also adapted the screenplay) stayed relatively faithful to Munro's story and did a nice job of using color, light, and camera angles to put her stamp on it--which is what the filmmaker should be focusing on, imho. All in all, thumbs up!

What did everyone else think?

Over the summer (2008) in a "Short Fiction and Film" Class, we read "The Bear Came Over the Mountain", then watched the film "Away From Her"'
I liked the film more than the short story, although it was interesting to read the short story. I prefer the 'tone' of the film and the ending (the short story ended somewhat abruptly, I thought).
Like 'zhew' (Message # 1), I liked the filmaker's use of color and light, especially the scenes in the snowy landscape.
