The Hole in the Wall by Arthur Morrison 1978

Written in 1902, the book is set in the London docklands at a time when crime flourished and extreme poverty was the norm. It is a thrilling book, easily read and hard to put down that describes the experiences of an orphaned young boy who goes to live with his grandfather in his corrupt, violent, seedy world. It is a very different type of crime thriller, as it is seen more from the side of those involved than the investigators. There are murders, mutilations, a drowning and of course, a lot of thieving.

It is a very well presented 200 page book with eight superb full-page drawings by Val Biro. There is a four page introduction by Peter Forster and it is bound in white cloth printed with a wrap-around design in black and dark green by Biro. The endleaves are plain pale grey and the dark grey-blue slipcase is 22.9x14.4cm. The page tops are stained light grey.

A little-known Folio gem. I'm so glad Warwick has included it in his archives series.

One of my favourite older Folios -- and you can still find one in good condition. The artist is that rarity -- one who has read every word of the book and brought it to life.

Helps to see pictures -- I'd read descriptions both Folio and non-Folio, but my interest is piqued with this assay. Thanks, wcarter!

My interest is also piqued. I have read Morrison's 'Tales Of Mean Streets' (in an old paperback edition) but was unaware that Folio had published 'The Hole In The Wall'. Thank you wcarter for the info.

Thank you again >1 wcarter:. I took down my volume and leafed through; wonderful drawings from Val Biro. This must be the first time I noticed that the printer/print/paper details etc. are at the back of the book. I had a quick search on both Richard Clay & Guard bridge paper mill. Looking at pictures of the production lines, these were substantial businesses. All gone.

I'll have to read my copy again (it's a very short work). I agree that the illustrations are wonderful; thanks for reminding me of them.
