Export not working

1LucindaLibri
Sep 4, 2021, 1:21 pm

I've tried export in both Opera and Chrome browsers (on Mac).
Tried both Excel and Tab-delimited.
All just "spin" at 0 books.
An earlier similar bug was closed, so I'm starting a new one.
Sorry if this is the wrong procedure. Haven't reported anything in a long time.

Not working for me, either. I'm using Chrome on Windows 10. Tried Excel first, gave up after maybe 5 minutes of "0 books processed" as LucindaLibri said; trying tab-delimited text now but getting the same result.

I was away from the laptop for 15-20 minutes, just got back to find that tab-delimited text *did* finally export the one collection I was trying to export. Since I was away long enough for the screen to go to sleep, I don't know how long the export took.

I'll try it with Excel again and cross my fingers that it's quicker.

Thanks for the feedback. I let it run for 10 minutes exporting tab-delimited. The first 5 minutes stayed at 0, then did 2944 books in the next 5 minutes. I'm leaving this as a bug because I don't remember it ever behaving that way in the past (or taking that long). Heading to check the file now.

>4 LucindaLibri: Yes, it's definitely taking longer than usual. This last time, for the Excel export, it was 4+ minutes of spinning and "0 books," and right around 5 minutes, it jumped to 100 books, then soon after to 143 (the number in the collection I wanted).

I agree it's worth having someone take a look to see what's causing it to not move for several minutes.

I am experiencing the exact same issue. Happens in Safari and Chrome on macOS. I am exporting a collection with only 20 books in it, roughly the same timeframe as others have described. Exporting to tab-delimited.

I am exporting that number of books about pretty frequently, at least once every few days and sometimes several times in one day. It was working normally on Monday, started happening yesterday.

Sounds like one or more of the servers are misbehaving.

I'm trying a JSON export of all books; Vivaldi/Win10. It has been running now for about 50 minutes without ever getting further than "0 books processed"

>10 LucindaLibri: Which is fine. The link between the two is to show that this was going off and on for at least awhile which can help with diagnosing the issue when LT engineers look at it.

Good to know it's not just me! I have "0 books processed" spinning on two computers -- WIN 7 & 10. Guess I'll check back later.

Seeing the same issue with JSON export.

I'm trying to export just one book, selected from a collection(which has just one book), and ten minutes or more later, I'm still getting "0 books processed" and it's still spinning. I'm using Chrome on a PC, Windows 10, if that makes a difference.

This must be an intermittent problem, because seven hours ago I was able to successfully perform a JSON export of all books.

>15 Foretopman: Either that or the problem is only in some of the servers - that would account for some exports working while others fail.

Give TPTB another day or two to look into it. First post to this thread was Saturday and it is the Labor Day weekend. I do like to do frequent backups, though.

I found this thread. Deleted my comment in another thread.

I cannot export my books. I'm trying to using Excel. It says trying to export but stays at 0 books exported. Several tries now. Thanks.

ETA: also does not work for a Tab-delimited text export.

From any browser on my computer.

ETA again: Reading all the posts, I guess I'll try again and wait...

ETA again: It finally worked for Excel but not yet for Tab-delimited text.

Thanks for the reports, and sorry for the trouble everyone. I've alerted developers of the issue, we'll look into it.

Mine is still spinning a good half-hour later for a TSV export.

I know it doesn't *really* matter since we couldn't use the exports to recover from an LT data loss anyway, but it's still discouraging that this gets a big shrug from staff. I mean, yes holiday weekend, but this should have been looked at first thing this morning, not "yeah we'll put it on the list and get to it whenever".

>20 lorax: I don't know about you, but I very seriously need back-up in the event of a data loss! I've currently got 3,269 books that are boxed, and my tags indicate what's what in each box. I desperately need that tag data, which is why I do frequent back-ups to Excel. I'd never find anything otherwise if my LT catalog were lost.

And a second comment on here. Now that Labor Day has passed, can one of the admins let us know the status on this situation?

>20 lorax: Definitely wasn't giving this a big shrug, sorry if that was confusing. I realize that export issues are something that needs to be looked at ASAP. I have already tested and confirmed the bug before passing it to developers this morning. ccatalfo is out on vacation today, and he normally handles this type of issue. I'm seeing if anyone can take a look before his return. This is not falling to "get to it whenever", FWIW.

CurrerBell (#21):

It's not a backup. It's an export. There's no way to restore from it. So yes, I make one regularly (monthly for me, since my catalog doesn't change rapidly enough for weekly to be required) but I have no illusion that if LT had data loss I'd ever be able to get it back into LT any quicker than just individually re-entering everything. Which is why I say it "doesn't really matter", since if I ever needed it I wouldn't be needing it here on LT.

kristilabrie (#24):

It's very hard for us to know where "I've alerted the developers and we'll look into it" falls on the scale from "We realize this is a serious issue and is a top priority" to "This bug has been acknowledged as existing".

Update: exports should be in the clear. If members want to re-export, they should be going through now. Please post here if you see any issues.

What happened: a particular member's (multiple) failed attempts at exports were dying and blocking the rest of the queue for other members.

ccatalfo is working on a couple of measures that will keep this particular issue from happening again.

Thanks for your patience.

Thank you! I can confirm that the TSV export now completes for me. Looking forward to the long-term fix.

What lorax said :-)

Thanks for the fix! I was perfectly fine letting it sit over the Labor Day weekend. Let's all remember what "Labor Day" is about (if you don't know, or are from another country, go look it up!)

It was only unfortunate coincidence that I had chosen to spend some of the weekend updating my personal spreadsheets that contain information about books read, books acquired, as well as art/music/theater events attended ("virtual" or live), movies/dvds watched, other streaming. I use the LT export to help fill in the book portion of the spreadsheets. But I had plenty of other data to fill in to keep me busy :)

>20 lorax: Lorax Please don't assume that the way YOU use LT is the way everyone uses it. One of the beauties of LT (for me) including the export feature, is all the data I can "grab" (without having to enter everything from scratch) and then use for my own purposes. So I do consider the exports "backups" . . . not for purposes of restoration on LT, but for my own purposes.

>21 CurrerBell: CurrerBell I also used LT tags and collections when I moved and had to box all my books. It was VERY helpful for figuring out what was where once I settled in a new place! And I used the LTExports to print the lists of what was in each box.

Thanks again!
P.S. Do I need to change the status of this bug? or is that something the staff does once they are satisfied the bug is fixed??

Apologies, I was attempting to do two things, neither of which was "to assume everyone uses LT in the way that (I) do".

One was to mention how I use it.

The other was to, yet again for the millionth time, complain about the utter inadequacy of the import feature. I will admit that this is something that I know the staff knows about, even though they either don't care or consider me an idiot for wanting a better import (Tim has in the past acted as though I think the catalog is just a spreadsheet), so I tend to be a bit brief when alluding to it.

>29 LucindaLibri: I'm waiting on an update from ccatalfo on the particular issue with the member that was killing the export queue, so I'm leaving the bug open for now as a reminder. Thanks!

>30 lorax: I do know about the incomplete import/export loop, and it's one of my highest wishlist items, too. I do care about it and I don't think you're an idiot for wanting a better process. I'm with you on this one.

I am trying to export my catalogue (+/- 1,300 titles) as MARC and Excel files. I have done this successfully before (in July, about 19 titles) as a test run, and it worked.

Today, when I try the same thing, the MARC file is absolutely garbled (checked with NotePad & MARCEdit), and trying to export as Excel file results in an error message.

Any thoughts and fixes?

NOTE: when trying to open with MARCEdit, I can't see any .mrc or .mrk files - to find the (scrambled) MARC exports, I have to choose "view all files".
