The Age of Illumination (3v.). Gothic Art and Civilisation by George Henderson; Early Medieval Art and Civilisation by George Henderson; Byzantine Art and Civilisation by Steven Runciman 2004

This magnificent three volume set is lavishly illustrated with integrated pictures of art and architectural works on almost every page. I read it by enjoying the illustrations then reading the appropriate nearby text when interested in a particular piece of art.

It is both a well indexed academic work as well as a pleasurable set of books to peruse. There is a bibliography at the end of each volume.

The three volumes are:-
Gothic Art and Civilisation by George Henderson (201 pages)
Early Medieval Art and Civilisation by George Henderson (260 pages)
Byzantine Art and Civilisation by Steven Runciman )184 pages).

The books are bound in gold cloth blocked on the cover with a black design, while the black slipcase (27.3x20x8.9cm.) is printed on the front with an stained glass window design. The page tops are gilt and the endpapers a glittering brown.

This one seems to be very good value second-hand. An underrated treasure.

Agreed. I bought a copy a few years ago very cheaply, and while I'm not really into the subject the illustrations alone make it worth while.
