Gilbert Osmund from The Portrait of a Lady by Henry James. Isabel Archer is a ditz, but she doesn't deserve that vile thing. Madame Merle, his gf, runs a close second.

Can't say that I actually hated any character other than those who were exceptionally cruel, and for me at least, not worth remembering their names.
Regardless, there quite a few of those.
Having said that, there is one main character for whom everyone who read any of the ten books in the series -- two trilogies and a quadrilogy -- absolutely hated. For me, they the best fantasy/fiction books I've ever read, except perhaps, The Hitchhiker's Guide. I can't decide.
Regardless, I'm referring to the title character in The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant. He was an unwilling participant in the fantasy world due to his discipline in mitigating his real-world medical condition, and because of life-long restrictions I have in my own life, I completely groked his unwillingness to be involved any more than absolutely necessary. I could relate to him. I could also relate to the motivations of the various characters whom he interacted with. But yeah, I understand why people refused to finish reading these books.

I think I tried to read what was probably the first of those Thomas Covenant books many many years ago and couldn't finish it. I also once read the first of what later became the Game of Thrones series. I finished it (I was stuck in South Sudan at the time with limit alternative sources of entertainment), but found it so dense and difficult that I never bothered to read any of the others.

Simon Legree, for sure, and the husband in a psychological thriller I read, but I can't remember the name!

All of George Macdonald Fraser's books are on my shelves well read. But in Mr American , that dreadful wife of his is so awful to him that the book remains half read to this day.

Undoubtedly, he got a transcript of the trial from me divorcing my first wife.
