70's YA novel with teens searching for Sasquatch in Oregon

Hi -- I believe this book was featured on Tom Robbin's Cover to Cover PBS show, so I am surprised that I can't seem to find any trace of it after multiple searches. Apologies that I have no idea what the title is.

The story (as well as I can remember it) is about a group of Oregon high schoolers who want to get a "scoop" in the local newspaper by finding Sasquatch / Bigfoot. One of the students is an athlete, another is Native American, one a photographer. In one scene I recall the tall athlete is fording a river with a loaded backpack and is struck by a floating log, and loses the backpack with all their supplies.

The Native American student is able to help them survive by knowing the forest better than the town kids. In one scene he knows about and is able to find dry firewood for them by locating hollows in old-growth trees where wood was stored for this purpose, decades or hundreds of years earlier.

In the end the students see something and get a blurry photo; aside from that it's mostly about character development, teamwork, and general survival in the wilderness.

It's possible that this did not take place in Oregon, but that is my memory. Any help appreciated; I'd love to find a copy and give it to my 8 year-old son.
