I was inspired to be a nerd by a book about a smart aleck who used his science knowledge to get one up on . I can only remember two episodes for sure:
1) The hero bet that he could lift up a big bully at the beach and did so in the water, using his knowledge of buoyancy;
2) Someone told him that they had made a universal solvent and the hero knew this couldn't be true because it would have been impossible to contain.
I grew up in the UK so this might have been a British book, but something tells me it was American.
Any help with the title very much appreciated!

Einstein Anderson: The Howling Dog and Other Cases by Seymour Simon. Includes chapters "The Universal Solvent" and "The Heavy Weight". It's a great series, and Seymour Simon is a wonderful "nerd" science author for young readers.
